Hi

Ive been reading the forum over the last week since having my car and this is my first post.

I have just bought a red 1996 1.8i mk1 mx5 with a hardtop. I picked the hardtop up to mount on the car today with a friend helping) and one of the chrome latches on the outside bt the rear window snapped off. I have had a quick look on mx5parts and couple other sites but cant find this part listed.

Wondered if anyone else has had the same happen to them or if they could offer any advice. I was planning on selling the hardtop as its not my main car and despite being a nice hardtop it will probably never get used, but cant really sell it broken!

Im also looking at swapping my aftermarket 15 inch wheels for standard 14s as i think my wheels are a bit too heavy in terms of unsprung weight and id welcome lighter steering too as ive not got power steering. Any recommendations on nice light 14 inch wheels would be welcome. Prefer the standard look to anything modified.

Can't help on the hardtop unfortunately, but I would imagine if the steering is too heavy with the aftermarket wheels then it's because the contact patch of the tyre is too big, rather than the wheel too heavy. The force you're trying to overcome when steering is the friction (grip) not gravity (weight) of the wheel.

In any case I would imagine there isn't a huge weight difference between a 15" aftermarket wheel + tyre and a 14" stock wheel +d tyre assuming the relative profile is similar. Try going back to stock width tyres when you change wheels.

You can find the weight of most wheels (without tyres) on http://www.wheelweights.net/

Be careful, the Mazda supplied wheels are often surprisingly light compared to aftermarket ones, and much of the handling is dependant on the unsprung weight.

Thats a good point about the contact patch i can see that would make the steering heavy, perhaps i could go down a tyre width from 195 to 185 depending on the width of the alloy of course..

Bad news I think. Assuming it's "snapped" off rather than the cap come apart where it's screwed together. It's done for. You can't repair them if it's been snapped off.

Any chance of a Photo to make sure my advice is actually good? By all means ask on the owners club forum as well. But it sounds like it's snapped and that's the end from your description. Sorry.
