Random intake box, resonator or expansion chamber?

Forgive my newbiness but what on earth is that attached to my intake pipework? I figured its either a resonator box or some sort of chamber to aid throttle response or something.

Yaaay, I knew something. So theres no need to banish it to she shed as it does its job just fine and infact a nice shiney straight pipe wouldnt be as good unless I go FI. Happy Days, Cheers guys
