Looking for a Mk1 for around £1500 mark
BUT, MX prices seem to be up and down and all over the place, basic price appears to be £1500 unless there is something visibly/seriously wrong
Do you think they will go down much at all? Or will they hold value for the foreseeable future
Why can you buy a 1995 at £1500, and a 1990 at same money- makes me think something is wrong with the newer one?
What would you aim for, older or newer?
(It's a minefield!)

You have to go see them. There will be chancers asking high prices this time of year but generally Mk1s of that vintage will be priced according to condition and to a lesser extent spec/mileage/history.
A grands worth of car will pretty much be a shed of high miles, dodgy bodywork, patchy or no history, and will need work. It may be roadworthy but not pretty. 1500 will slightly less of a shed. 2k getting on for good condition and lower miles. 2.5k up should be very very good indeed.

Obviously, there are exceptions to the norm. However it would seem the following applies to most for sale:
<£1000 = Higher mileage early Mk1 in 'fair' condition with a reasonably basic spec.
£1000-£1500 = Average mileage early Mk1 in fair to good condition
£1500-£2000 = Average mileage '91-'96 Mk1 in good/very good condition
£2000-£2500 = Average/lowish mileage later Mk1 in good/very good condition
£2500-£3000 = Lowish mileage later Mk1 in very good/excellent condition.
£3000-£3500+ = Lowish mileage special editions in very good condition.

They've got to the point where the age really doesn't matter.
Which would you rather have for £1500 - the H reg with 90k, or the R reg with 160k? Answer: the one that isn't rusty...
Buy on condition. And welcome to the club
Mine had a bit of rust when I bought it, but I had the lot professionally done for £375 which isn't too bad as far as bills go. They had the car for some time and did a bloody superb job so I'm chuffed.Which would you rather have for £1500 - the H reg with 90k, or the R reg with 160k? Answer: the one that isn't rusty...

I have registered interest, but I am in same position as you- not yet sold my other car, well, in fact it's not gone up for sale, still deciding if I need to service it before selling...missdiane said:
Hmm, I'd be wary of that one..."GLOSS BLACK, FULL YEARS MOT, JULY TAX, SERVICE HISTORY, BIEGE LEATHER, BRAND NEW BIEGE ROOF,KENWOOD CD PLAYER, TOAD ALARM, P/STEERING, E/WINS, E/MIRRS, ALLOYS, GOOD CONDITION INSIDE OUT, VERY FAST,
OPEN 7 DAYS, "

Seriously, looks good if you like the tan/black combo.
