Folks,

I have a Tag Heuer Carrera Automatic Chronograph. The crown, the bit which you change the date and time with, has snapped off.

I popped into Beaverbrooks who advised me they will send it off to Tag and they will service it and fix the watch. They estimated the cost of service to be £220.

I had a look on Tag's website and their service cost is nearer to £450!

Could anyone recommend on the best approach to get the watch fixed? Has anyone used https://fixmywatch.co.uk? Or any other company like this?

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Try https://www.prestigetimeservices.co.uk/ . Cost £300 plus VAT to replace a broken crown, service and ultrasonic clean on my Oris BC3.

I've used Watch Doctors in Tring to fix my Tag a few times, they've serviced it twice, mended the bracelet and replaced the crown. Always for less than the initial quote and always within a reasonable timeframe.

Realistically, if it doesn’t need a service you shouldn’t have to pay for one.
I would fit a new crown for about £50 if that is all it needs.

If you actually want a service though, including crown and refurb, it would be £150.

It might be more helpful if you tell us where he can get this done for £50/£150?

‘OEM’ servicing/repairs don’t work like that (I suspect you know that )

Another thumbs-up for Joe at Anglesea Watch & Clock. He repaired my automatic Carrera for a fraction of the price TH wanted.

My Aquaracer lost a pin from the bracelet at about 5 years old, as it had never been serviced before I had my local Goldsmiths send it away to Tag, 4 months and almost £400 later I got it back, in a lovely TAG box looking as good as new.

YMMV but I think I'd always use an official centre for watch servicing.

Indeed I do know that.
I find it quite frustrating as it’s just an automatic response when a brand receives a watch.

I estimate for what the watch requires and then offer optional repairs.
If I don’t think it needs a service, I wouldn’t recommend one.

I’m In the north east of england. It is a little quiet at the moment so I am opening up to postal repairs. Cost of postage comes off the repair costs.

It is a bit crazy sometimes if its something small.

However, I put my omega PO in to omega for a service and repair (mainspring snapped) and it came back having the following.

New main spring.
New hands
4 new movement gears
New winding gears
New escapement wheel
New pallet fork
New Seals
New crown
New Balance wheel and hair spring.
Case refinished back to as new.

For just over 300 I didnt think that was too bad....

Yeah, that’s just just a normal service.
The service cost should always cover the replacement of any wheels, springs, screws, seals, etc that are deemed necessary to be replaced.

Omega and Breitling are the best in terms Of value for money. Plus you can send or visit directly and pay the trade cost rather than retail. (Which you did, as the retail on your watch is about £600)
