On the tube today, bloke sat opposite. Had a square watch, largish but not huge. White or silver face with a blue leather strap, Arabic numerals from 8 around to 4 that were bright red, quite bold. Across the bottom from 7 to 5 were 3 or 4 small subdials, chrono style.

Anyone got any ideas?

Dunno, but it sounds horrid. Probably a Tag? Or a No Name quartz costume piece.

In what way? The ones you've linked to have a round face, no arabic numerals, no red numbers and I can't see a blue leather strap on the link either. In fact everything the OP has stated, you've linked the exact opposite.

You'd have done better if you'd just said 'MX5'

Oh forgive me!

It was the description of sub-dials across the face that made me think of it. Also I did say “a bit like”, still, at least your suggestions are much closer ...

Perhaps a smartwatch (Apple?) with a downloaded face? You can make a smartwatch look like just about anything, more so if you have the skills to create the face yourself.

Swine.

The only half way respectable manufacturer I can think of is Eberhard, who I believe were the first with the layout, in the round 4 Chrono, but their tonneau version had the subdials vertically.

Lots of cheap fashion watches copied the layout though.

Nope, it wasn't a virtual face. Looks like it will remain a mystery. Shame it was on the tube. Normally I would ask, but on the tube it would have looked like I was trying to hit on the guy! hehe

Google the Diesel chronographs, they did a lot of unusual face designs with off-centre sub dials.

Some weirs and wonderful stuff for sure, but no matches I'm afraid.

No, arabic numerals as per your pick. Numbers were bright red, and subdials we round and horizontal across the bottom.

To be honest, with numerals ranging from 8 - 4, it doesn't leave much dial space for 3 proper chronograph sub-dials. They'd have to be tiny sub-dials, which makes it more likely to be a quartz watch. I'd say it was an eBay special, or some fashion watch.

As someone else pointed out, my first thought was an Eberhard Chrono 4, but their cases are not square.

Tbh the dials looked fairly normal sized. One was where the 7 would be, the other where the 6 would be, and one where the 5 would be. Horizontal across the bottom.
