Hi guys,

I've got a Speedmaster Automatic, which I bought from ebay in Feb from a Japanese seller. It was apparently serviced before being sold but we can take that with a pinch of salt.

All was well and I'm really enjoying wearing it. However I'm concerned it may have become magnetised as the time keeping seems to have got worse, I'm not sure exactly how this happened but my laptop bag has magnets to close the flaps :snigger: which may be the cause, I also moved recently and was lugging around subwoofers and microwaves and stupidly left my watch on.

I matched it up with my phone on Wednesday and by this morning it was nearly 4 or 5 minutes ahead, it also seems to be worse when I'm not wearing i.e. overnight when its left on the bed side table.

Does this sound like a problem caused by it being magnetised or something else?

Is it authentic? Sorry, just the first thing that sprung to mind when I saw eBay and Japan.

If not, I suspect there lies the cause of the poor time keeping.

I'm not qualified to identify a fake but if you post a few photos I'm sure someone more knowledgeable could confirm.

Granted I know nothing about this but after watching a video from The Urban Gentry on youtube , he recommended one of these , for what they cost may be worth a try

Fair question. As far as I know it’s authentic, came with box and papers from a legit source,
I’ve not taken the back off yet though.

First pic is from the sellers advert, others from today!

Magnetism check with a compass as per the pic (top right compass is pointing the other way). Demagnetism by a local watch repairer with a machine that applies a magnetic field in a rapidly changing chaotic manner to remove any preferred magnetic alignment. Typically about £20 or 30.

If it's not magnetised then it likely could do with a good clean and re-oiling of the movement. Dust makes its way into the case over the years and as the oil dries out you can get the odd gunky bit stuck to a timekeeping component. Typically about £350

If the 5 mins out is the same way each day it's better than it meandering about. If it's meandering about then there could be something dislodged in the movement requiring a repair. Little more than £350

Not a Speedmaster expert by any stretch but just comparing to mine, the subdials are on different sides and it appears to have a sapphire crystal and solid case back which is unusual given they are normally hesalite. The crown guards are also a different shape. I don't know if this is specific to a certain production year but I always though on the Speedy Pro at least the subdials would remain on the same side. Best thing is to have someone more knowledgeable open the case back and have a look at it.

Thanks for advice guys.

Just a slight update, I was passing Omega on Bond Street the other day and they demagnetised it for me, at least they put it across their machine. Hopefully it will be better from now on.
