A thought to be unique 18ct white gold Rolex Daytona 6265 sold today at Phillips Daytona Ultimatum sale at CHF5.9m (£4.35m).

https://www.phillips.com/detail/ROLEX/CH080318/8

The price was so high because the watch is believed to be the only example produced in 18ct white gold. The bracelet is period (from a 1501) but not original, in addition the crown is steel. For comparison, similar watches in steel sold at CHF150-200000.

In other news today, Ayton Senna's 1993 Monaco GP winning MP4/8-6 sold today at 4.2m Euro (£3.7m)

The common denominator, is that both are powered by a proprietary/off the shelf engine/movement. wink

The Daytona is a bitsa.... it didn’t have that dial originally, and there are a few other irregularities with it.
If it was anyone other than goldberger selling it (and for charity too- so kudos for that) it wouldn’t have ever got anywhere near the catalogue let alone the hodinkee assisted level of hype about it.

The strap/bracelet thing is also hideous.

Did you see the LHD GMT Phillips posted on social media channels for one of their forthcoming auctions. It looked interesting but my first thoughts were must be fake. Surely Rolex can provide verification for these auctions?

Unfortunately I don’t have the sort of cash the vintage watches now command but it seems like there are a lot of duds out there and even the big auction houses with experts on the payroll can be duped. The perezcope blog makes very interesting reading and the reach of sites like Hodinkee who promote the auctions and notable sales seem to encourage fraudsters.

The whole charity thing is interesting too, call me cynical but have they actually declared how much of this Unicorn sale is going to charity? It likely inflated the price and guess only a fraction will be passed on.

I just read the interview on the Philips site - so only the case, caseback and movement are original. Bracelet, dial, hands, pushers, crown are not original to the watch, Phillips will be selling Peckham spring water next!!

Bernie Ecclestone bought the McLaren. Don’t know who bought the Daytona.
