Hi all,

Looking for some advice, recently inherited a 16203 Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust 36mm from my late father, dad wore it everyday as he received it from my mum for his 40th. He also got another one for his 50th but he didn't wear that as much. I've never been a watch wearer up until receiving this but have wore it every day since.

While I was in the Rolex AD getting it adjusted I spotted a Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra James Bond Spectre edition in the 2nd hand cabinet for about £4.2k, being a big James Bond fan I was drawn to it.

Since then I've been looking at watches and have since fallen for and put myself on the list for a Tudor Black Bay GMT, reason for this was I quite like the Pepsi Rolex GMT but that's well out of budget and the Tudor caught my attention.

Problem is being a big James Bond fan I'm also drawn to a 2531.80.00 Omega Seamaster 300m I've found one on watchfinder with papers & box for £2.2k (2006 model), The Tudor is £2.7k new.

Where would you say the money is better spent? a 2nd hand Seamaster or brand new Tudor Black Bay GMT. The BB GMT probably wouldn't arrive till September where as the Seamaster could be had within weeks. I've also got a mate who can get Tudor with staff discount of them, he can't get me discount of the BB GMT but can get me a red bezel black bay to fill the gap until the BB GMT arrives.

This will be my first proper watch purchase, my most expensive watch before this was a £220 TW Steel that I've warn 3 times since. I'm not doing this as an investment as such but would like to think its not going to loose money! Hopefully gain a little..

Have you seen the Steinhart?

This, with a Bond NATO strap, would be enough of a Bond tribute for me. Given the price, I've been tempted by this for a while now.

I am not clear on a couple of things here. The other watch your Dad got for his 50th, is that another Rolex?

Are you suggesting you're keeping your Dad's watches, or selling them to buy something else?

To be honest, you sound like you've had your head turned by the bright lights of your local Goldsmiths showroom. You aren't James Bond and won't become him by buying buying the watch the fictional character wore in a recent film, were the film maker was paid a lot of money to sell it to you.

My view is that you should take your Dad's daily wearer down to Goldsmiths and get them to send it back to Rolex for a service and clean up. If his other watch is decent, possibly do the same with that.

You have got the coolest watch in the world - a quality one left to you by your Dad. Why would you want to buy what is, in comparison, insignificant tat?

where did you get trade in from?

he said should I get a tudor black bay gmt or the 007 seamaster. Fairly basic question.

Also, ignore the above advice and don't sent your rolex back to rolex to service, not only do they charge far more than equally competent people, but they change absolutely everything that isn't perfect, eventually leaving you with a triggers broom of a watch. Fine if you have a almost new, non sentimental watch, but not what I would do to something that I wanted to cherish.

In response to which watch, I'm assuming your worried about the depreciation of each? as in which is going to lose the least amount of money? try not to let this sway your decision, buy what you love the most and consider the money "lost" so to speak. If you choose to change or sell it after a while and there is still a bit of value there, then great, but don't let it make the decision for you smile these are after all emotion items, as soon as we start applying logic, it all falls apart :P

The Rolex I have (40th one) I'm wearing right now, it's 100% being kept. This is an additional purchase to rotate with the Rolex. The 50th one my sister has.

For example I'm at a mates wedding in Greece in 2 weeks, don't really want to take the Rolex there if I'm honest, simply because if it went missing the sentimental value can't be replaced. It's covered as a named item on house insurance but still don't wanna take it.

So I've whittled it down to either new Tudor Black Bay Red or Seamaster 300.

Wish the Tudor BB GMT would be here in time haha.

If you are into the Bond thing there are the 007 special seamasters, my personal fave is the one with the rifling on the face and the 007 on the second hand. Think it was produced for Casino Royale.

Logically, I completely agree with this. But...... I want my next watch to be an Omega - for the pure, simple and utterly shallow reason that I have an Aston, and I therefore believe that if I wear an Omega in my Aston I will in fact be James Bond. And - having discovered a few weeks ago that the Spectre watch exists, I do want the 007 version.

It's utterly childish, and I'm aware that I've fallen under the marketing spell - but it's only a very thin sliver of common sense which has stopped me purchasing one so far!

The irony being that James Bond (in the films at least) never had the best of anything, yet he is seen by most as a connoisseur who appreciates and settles for nothing but the best.

Strange world.

In Spectre, I must admit I preferred the Jag. I still want to be James Bond though.

Of course in the books he wears a Rolex anyway. So OP continue to wear your Dad’s watch it’s closer to the ‘truth’.

Sounds like bullet proof and infallible logic to me. Anything outside a timex or sekonda is a purchase from the heart rather than the brain and if the heart says 007 Omega then it's a done deal.

That seems strong money for a seamaster 300m. You can generally get these in good condition for £1200-£1400 in a private sale. TZUK forums is a good place to look. As much as I like them, I certainly wouldn't pay £2200 for one.

What a coincidence!
Do you by any chance know this guy who just this Monday posted that he had inherited a Rolex and was also trying to decide between a Black Bay and a 007 Seamaster?
If I were you, I'd pm the chap. If you get one watch and he gets the other, maybe you could swap on a monthly basis.
biggrin
I'm helpful I am.

Fully aware of that but budget at the moment can't stretch to a Submariner. I'm looking for another to rotate the Rolex with.

What would you say is a good range for a 2531.80.00 that has papers/box and comes from an AD with warranty? or even a 2220.80.00.

Fleming got it wrong wink Any Royal Navy Commander who wasn't born with a silver spoon in his mouth would have worn an Omega , plus they were UK military issue smile
