My taste in watches, is it just me?
Discussion
I have only recently shown any interest in watches. Some of the more well-off guys in my office suggested getting a Rolex, as from new I can sell it on and get an immediate increase on my investment. Of course after trying, it's pretty much impossible, as so many others obviously have the same idea and I am way too late to the party. You can't even be put on the waiting list and if you were, then you would probably have to wait months, if not years.
I have to say my taste in all things changes from one day to the next and it certainly doesn't appeal to all, watches included. I have been looking at watches non-stop for weeks now and they all look the same to me, clones of each other and no personality. I see all these reviews or best rated watches and none of them blow me away. Any that do grab my fancy would require me to sell a lung to even afford. I really need to find something else to obsess about
I have made my decisions on some watches and am getting soon. Louis Moinet - Jules Verne Instrument III (non Rose Gold version) and a Wyler Code R All-Black. I am now smitten with the Wyler watches and want to buy all I can find, but 1 for now will do :-). I know they are no longer in business and I am not too bothered about how perfect they are or aren't, but they look amazing to me. Their prices are very reasonable from the original RRP's, so for me it's a bargain
I might even sell my Moinet to buy more Wylers :-)

Like you, I've only recently started getting into watches and now find myself in this forum more and more and find it fascinating.
Just the same as cars, everybody's taste is different and just like cars some people just buy the perceived 'best brand' while others buy it for its engineering etc. Others just buy a watch to tell the time.
Owning/buying a Rolex does nothing for me either, but I can appreciate them as I do say a new 911.
Be yourself and get what 'you' like, not the crowd in the office.
Cheers for the heads up on Wylers, that's why I enjoy this subforum. Bit busy for me though.

Haha you are welcome. Check out the Chrono24 site, have ordered my Wyler from there. Some of the Wylers on there for sale are near the original RRP, but most are much less. I am tempted to get another just in case they rocket up in price one day, plus they are less common, which for me is something I always look for. I know what you mean about the cars. I like something understated, but also I appreciate the aesthetics too, so I am pretty inconsistent :-). I have a Golf R estate in Blue, which doesn't attract too much attention, but also a red and black mk1 TT 240 QS, which stands out in a crowd lol
Like you my tastes can be eclectic.
I love Grahams for example (and have 3), I have a U-Boat and several Panerai (and Magrette "look a likes").
Like you I'm not a fan of the Rolex styles - they just seem bland in comparison to others.
The Code R has a modern style equivalent in Formex - a small Swiss micro brand. In particular the Formex Element has many of the styling cues of the Code R.
I very nearly pushed the button on a Formex Element but in the end went with the special edition Magrette Kara.
Buy what you like and you'll wear it and enjoy it. Buy something else because the crowd all buy them and it'll end up in a drawer.

Check out the Chrono24 site
Yes, it's now an invaluable favourite.
Today's most wanted after a thread on here yesterday:

That looks like a redial to me. The case has been heavily polished. There are no pictures of the movement.

The seller says "restored".
I say "pig wearing lipstick" until proven otherwise. Sadly the proof otherwise would be a few pictures of the movement and the inside of the case back. Any trade seller of watches knows that movement pictures help differentiate the wheat from the chaff, so you should ask yourself why any trade seller would deliberately omit them.
Sorry, but IMHO, that isn't worth 1/8th of what the seller is asking. In original, mint condition it, on a really good day, it would struggle to be worth half. But that is neither original nor mint.
I wouldn't touch that watch with a barge pole.

The Enicar prices seem to be all over the place with real ebay bargains in India.

Still think it's a pretty watch though, and the seller has decent enough reviews. But I think the want has faded now as I keep going back to the Longines Heritage Conquest.

The ones redialled with crayons? Yeah, bargain.Unless you want it to tell the time, or not look like it's been redialled with a crayon, or not fall apart.
You might like this collection of Enicar (looking as they should):

I also don't buy into the 'must-have a Rolex' mindset. Lovely watches, well made and, generally, good looking but, IMHO, possibly at risk of becoming a little obvious.
Fine if you like them and that's what you want, and I don't decry anybody who has one or more, but I would simply buy what appeals. Having said that, I've never been swayed by 'Brands' so I'm probably out of step with the world.

I don’t really get the attraction or urge to own/wear a Rolex. I do know that they are excellent watches but they are everywhere. For example, we go to Italy on holiday a fair bit and virtually every waiter & bus driver that you come across Has one on their wrist (nothing wrong with a waiter or bus driver by the way). I also don’t ‘get’ why Tudor are so popular/well regarded - effectively a sub-brand of Rolex.
