Good post and useful,

but surely: watch stolen, owner calls insurance company, insurance company pays out and notes serial number, perhaps insurance company shares serial number with other insurance companies, watch turns up and police inform insurance company of the location of their property, or company pays attention to stolen/seized goods lists

If I ran an insurance company that's how I'd structure it.

If you get a payout for your stolen goods, don't they then belong to the insurance company if they're found? Because those two watches are unsellable as the serial numbers are on the "Stolen List"

Obviously you could swap back for a sentimental item. But what about 3yrs later?
