Rolex AD Frankfurt airport
Discussion
Had a bit of time to kill yesterday, so went into the Rolex AD in Frankfurt terminal 2.
After a quick chat it became apparent that they had a sub date stashed in the back.
Unfortunately, they wouldn’t sell it, because I didn’t have a relationship with them! There’s me thinking the airport ADs were a bit more pot luck.
After a bit of banter they actually said I could buy it.........if I spent 10,000 Euro on something else.
I know the drill, but this stuff is so irritating.

Strange, I got a very different response from schiphol airport, who I have visited pretty much every week for the past 6 months, they said
No knowing what they were getting in stock or when, and no waiting list (black book of names).
Stock on the shelves day it arrives, first come first serve.

Sub date shouldn't be too hard to come by in UK. Most ADs can source one for a new customer in about 6 weeks. After a quick chat it became apparent that they had a sub date stashed in the back.

Is this correct? I bought an Explorer 2 a year ago with a view that I would be put on the list for a GMT not heard a dicky bird

Depends on dealer and location but my exeperience. I waited about 5 weeks after expressing initial interest befor being able to buy a GMT in 2017. Date Sub this year, got a call back after 4 weeks. Worth the occasional follow up call with AD but avoid pestering.

I got told the same - pot luck, if it's there, you can buy it. No knowing what they were getting in stock or when, and no waiting list (black book of names).

Have to agree, sounds bloody ridiculous..f
k this relationship b
ks.If they only have a certain allocation coming in then I can understand offering them to existing customers first, but if they have something 'available' that they're just refusing to sell to someone there and then with money in hand..
My relationship with a Rolex AD Airport started recently (last 2 years) when i bought two high value pieces on one go. that really set the tone and i capitalised on it. i befriended the manager and the floor salesperson there and made sure i kept in contact every now and again and when i passed through the airport. It helped as i was able to buy at tax free retail price a blue face sky dweller as well as a sub/black date. i bought the Sub simply to (1) keep the relationship and (2) i would actually lose money buy not buying it, as from what i have seen the 2nd hand market is at close to £8k and if your buying sub £6k your quids in.
i say the above, as i would be quite annoyed if after all the investment i made with that AD someone can simply walk in randomly and buy a high demand watch. maybe not the black sub/ date, but say if it was a Pepsi/ jubilee.... that is the next target for me and i think customers who show intent to build up a collection and are not flippers, should have the benefit of the AD's making sure certain watches are reserved for loyal customers.
i accept that the flip side that some people are restricted on buying, but sadly it seems that this issue is not created by the AD but by the flippers/ IG sellers who seek to take advantage of the market. The AD are simply protecting their business.

Apologies if I've misunderstood but you still have to pay tax on the Sub on entering the UK?Otherwise I think you'd struggle to sell it on at all, never mind at a significant premium...

If it’s worn in on the wrist, is Mr HMRC necessarily going to have to know about it?
Probably not, but has been discussed at length before. I came back from my sales conference this year. Most of the account managers wore a Rolex of some sort. As we left, of them walked out through 'nothing to declare' without so much as a random check.

Well you either pay the tax due or be stuck with a watch that no legitimate buyer would touch with a bargepole.Either way the "plan" of flogging an untaxed £6k Rolex for eight grand is pure fantasy.

In my experience, most salesmen (or women, for that matter), have a fairly simple (as in not-complex) mindset and that is to make sales and earn money. There are few, if any, who work to any other principles and unless it's a long-standing personal relationship / friendship it's a fallacy to think you receive 'special treatment'. Yes, you might be fawned over but so will the next person who might make a purchase.i say the above, as i would be quite annoyed if after all the investment i made with that AD someone can simply walk in randomly and buy a high demand watch. maybe not the black sub/ date, but say if it was a Pepsi/ jubilee.... that is the next target for me and i think customers who show intent to build up a collection and are not flippers, should have the benefit of the AD's making sure certain watches are reserved for loyal customers.

'I would actually lose money by not buying it'; well, you wouldn't 'lose' anything although you might miss the opportunity to make something. They're not really quite the same thing. If you want certain watches reserved for loyal customers I think you might need to 'spend a bit more' with that AD, assuming you want to be seen as a loyal customer. You can call it what you like but the AD's bottom line is 'what's in it for me'.
The funny thing is, this nonsense only seems to really be noticeable with Rolex, I certainly haven't come across it with other 'prestigious brands', certainly those further up-market.
If you're after decent property and would like to become a 'special customer', why not simply buy the odd one or two , through me, to set up our relationship and then I promise I'll classify you as a 'special customer' and let you have first refusal on even-better ones coming to market. Obviously, I'd do that because we're friends, not because it makes my life easier and helps my bottom line. Honestly.
Let me know.

However if buying in the EU it's not a problem as tax is paid. Important to note Switzerland is not in the EU so tax applies. Of course all this Will change Match 29th (along with cigarette and alcohol allowances).

I think we've discussed this before & yes it can happen but very unlikely. The example I believe I gave previously was from last year when I came back from St Lucia. For the first time ever got stopped going through green channel at LGW. Pulled over, both wife & myself wearing nearly new Rolexes. Not even noticed or commented on, quick flick through my passport & off we go. https://www.newarkadvertiser.co.uk/news/customs-st...
