6,2k for a watch that Rolex couldn shift for 5k 3 years ago? Are we in a LALA land or did I miss something?

The thing is, there's no logic in watches - and, many would argue, neither should there be.

I have always struggled to understand why the Explorer was so undervalued compared to the GMT/ Sub.

Because it is a bit st, let's be honest. The only reason it is so overvalued now is due to global shortage of SS Rolex watches. I think UN should do something about it.

Why is it a bit st? I think I prefer them to the GMT

It's a bit meh. That's why they weren't selling.

Current list price £6250. Chance of discount on SS Professional watches from AD close to zero. Watch in video still has stickers on and is immeadiately available. Don’t think they’re in LaLa land.

I enquired last year and there was at least a six month wait in goldsmiths. Admittedly not selling as well as the sub or gmt which they said there's no point waiting for!

16570 fly under the radar and a somewhat over-looked classic. Not sure about the latest gen with its oversized case but the first gen will I am sure have its day.

I remember the Milgauss for sale in the 80s thinking WTF would buy one of those? Given the originals are now £20k+ any scientist/boffin that did has a decent return.

Lets face it the Explorer has been a relative poor seller as most are initially drawn to the subs for the obvious reasons, however the shortage of Subs/SDs/GMTs has made people look at the Explorer, something they might not have done otherwise. It really is a great watch, becoming harder to get, so prices on the up.

I have a 16570, I wear it everyday and as said above it is an under the radar watch, it's extremely comfortable and a watch you don't have to baby and get all precious about.

I bought a nice used 2005 one from Mark Worthington jewellers (good online for £4750 just over a year ago. They were good to deal with, all serviced etc.

Very pleased with it.

I really didn't take to the later 42mm version, I have a black dial 40mm version and it's just perfect for me, goes with everything and it's super comfortable and has a nice low profile/slimness to it.

Most of all I like having a Rolex but it doesn't feel like a shouty one and has it's own understated charm and as the guy above says, you don't have to baby it too much.

WF had them at £5,250 a year ago - now they've added a grand.

Blackface Exp II - I think is one of the best-looking watches.

Sold mine in 1996 for £1,250, to part-fund the deposit on our first house.

I then sold my 1999 GMT II in early 2017, just before prices went through the roof (box, papers etc via SOR for £4k to me)

I wonder if some of the value rise, is pound/euro exchange rate movement (dropped 30% or so in the past 3 years)

I really like the Exp II Polar and I actually really don't understand why so many people want Subs, I just find them a bit boring. I'm not a fan of the bezel edges on the Rolexes with rotating bezels, nor do I particularly like the jubilee bracelets on the current GMT IIs. I guess I'm fussy, but that eliminates many of the SS models for me smile

The Explorer I is my current favorite. Wonderful thing.
