I’ve got a 2005 S/S Sub Date which I purchased new from WOS. I hardly ever wear it so toying with selling it. Prices seem all over the place. What’s the general trend, are they going up, down or treading water?

Generally up.

I have a 1986 model paid second hand 7 years ago £2600 valued now £5400. The longer you keep it the more it’s worth

Crikey. Just had another look on watchfinder etc and prices seem to have jumped up a fair bit in the past few months. Are they selling or is it kite flying?

I think you'll find that WF prices are "optimistic".... Try Chrono24 for a better indicator, but you might want to disregard some of the more speculative prices on there too

Generally, if its a watch with a plentiful supply, the market will set the price - just take an average of a dozen or so prices of watches very similar to yours.

If the watch is more exclusive (eg Submariner 'Hulk' or stainless Daytona) then prices are anyone's guess, ranging from eye-watering to frankly ridiculous. Still, while there are buyers willing to pay the prices, there will be sellers willing to take advantage.

Most commentators say that the bubble has to burst soon, but then they've been saynig that for the last two or three years....

My sub non date cost me £1300 many years ago, paid £3670 for my Daytona 15 years ago , the bubble can burst and It’ll be the grey dealers that take the real hit , not the guy in the street with one or two nice watches purchased at more realistic prices.

I just purchased a 1999 sub date "swiss only dial" from it`s original owner full set with purchase receipt and hardly worn and gave him £5800. Which I though was fair

Bought a new date Sub from my AD in April; Chrono24 saying it’s increased in value by 38% since then. Nice to know, but a fun fact only (for the moment!).

More interestingly, my black GMT II bought exactly 12 months ago has increased in value by 80% its saying; probably helped by it being discontinued.

I think that’s a bit optimistic, there are absolutely loads of black GMT’s for sale on all the watch sites, many have been there for a long time. The ones looking for a quicker sale are more sensibly priced around the 9K mark for older 2009 116710LN and even they’re not shifting.

Do they have a valuation tool (can’t see one)? Browsing on chrono 24 confirms values have jumped a lot. I don’t need to sell it but just don’t wear it living in the sticks. At the moment it looks better than money in the bank.

You can create an a account and then save watches as my watches or favourites or wish list (I can’t remember which) and it shows general sale prices over the last few months and years etc.

Guess when the black gmt got discontinued.

Generally speaking.

You can put in your watch and what it cost and age etc for more information about how much money you’ve made etc. hehe

Try selling it at the quoted price , then see how much you make.

Dom Hackett has just sold (according to his site, not that I visit it often... honest!) a 2-year-old no-date for £7,395

Nearly £2k over the then-list price of £5,450, and a substantial premium for the less, even the least, desirable of the bunch. I think this market is madness, but I guess if I were selling one I would probably reconsider my opinion...

The Kermit isn't doing to badly, which isn't bad for a watch nobody wanted back in the day
The good thing is with this service the price isn't just picked out the air but its from watches
sold on Chrono24

That can’t be the same Sub as mine. Chrono24 is suggesting £6,305 (2005 model 16610) although those of the same provenance and condition seem to be up for a fair bit more than that. Of course, they are for sale, not sold.
The model in that pic is a 116610LN, the ceramic version

The 'fat fours' are firmly at the top of the pile price wise, chrono 24 prices starting at just under 10k now for 'pointy fours'. A short while ago I saw one asking 44k, some real chancers about. Kermits in a definite bubble which will do what bubbles always do. Mine's not going anywhere, I bought it because I fell in love with it at first sight when they were new.

Bought a flat four from a dealer for £5k 4 years ago...sold it on Chrono24 last year for £15k...

Loved it, but selling allowed purchase of two new Rolexes (that as mentioned earlier, are enjoying their own rise in values).

I buy you watches I like, it’s just the ones I like coincidentally keep rising in value!
