So my recent break in where my (VWFS’s) Cupra was stolen off the drive also included an opportunistic theft of my well loved Seiko Sumo SBDC003 “Blumo” which was in a drawer the thieves looked into when searching for the keys.

It was a JDM model bought from Seiya a few years ago as a general all round weekend/dress down/holiday watch.

But, rather than be down in the mouth about it, time to find something else to do the same role. Part of me wants to spend up to match my GS, but then other part of me likes the idea of better value and less worries about being scratched/stolen etc.

Budget up to £1k and s/h considered.

Suggestions please! Cheers!

Sorry about the theft but you seem to have the right attitude. biggrin Loads of interesting divers at this price, especially if you're prepared to go second hand!

A Sinn would make a great tool watch and this one's up for £925:

There's always a bunch of Oris divers up for < £1000:

I've got a Ball Diver (not this one) that I got 2nd hand and I think it's great value for money at this price. You often see Ball watches go for <£1000. It's got a really solid feel to the watch and bracelet and they come with the added bonus of radioactive Tritium dials!

I've also got a bronze Magrette diver which is lovely. They've just released the GMT version on pre-order which I'm slightly gutted about as I'd love GMT and date.

Sorry to hear that your Sumo was stolen. Awful.

Now, with that budget I’m going to suggest an alternative approach.

Get a vintage dive watch for everyday use and wear it on a new NATO strap. A lovely combination.

Then, for holiday and pool duties ie when it’s actually going to get wet, swap to a Bill Gate Casio quartz diver or similar, or a Citizen Eco Drive.

I think I’d have to agree with Barchettaman. As my recent holiday watch woes have taught me, two watches are always better than one!

Cheers guys - interesting thoughts and suggestions.

The Sumo was no shelf queen - though never a “beater”. It was dived with and visited plenty of seas and oceans.

While diving unlikely to happen again (for other reasons) the idea of a “dress-ier” diver is now coming to mind.

So I go for a generic email holiday watch that is low cost and low risk, but then up the budget and get something that’s the dress down complement to my GS Snowflake.

Am going to go and investigate all suggestions above. Cheers!

EDIT: in life I like to choose things a little less ordinary, so suggestions like Oris are great as you don’t see them every day.

I have a Precista PRS82 as a dive watch - but don’t actually dive with it.

Available on timefactors website.

For diving I use a deep blu or Suunto dive computer (watch)

That looks great. I don’t need a diver but if I did...

I should add - for diving holidays I just take a cheap casio g-shock or similar along in addition to my dive computer.

most dive locations are 2nd/3rd world ( Indonesia / philippines / thailand / borneo etc ) and I simply dont want the worry / hassle of an expensive watch that needs locking up and is a target for theft.

Oris are a solid bet. I have two, a TT1 (sports type) and an Aquis (diver).

The Aquis is getting alot of wrist time at the moment!

Interestingly, waving the Chrono24 app in front of the other half didn't meet with much approval on Oris. But a quick flash of a Tudor Pelagos did....

Looks like the budget is going up (and so the time to replace will get longer - the costs of being burgled/car stolen are a gift that keeps on giving....)

Worth having a look at Steinhart Ocean One, particularly the titanium version. It's lush

I bought an Omega Seamaster Chrono Diver Titanium for £1700 back in May. Needs a crystal replacement, but keeps perfect time and is very clean that aside.

In the £1500-2k ballpark there's a huge amount of stuff for all tastes, especially S/H.

To be fair my Tuna in the photo is a SBBN007 dated 87 but they do look timeless to be fair

If you want to stick with Seiko and blue I can certainly recommend the SBDC053 . It really is a lovely watch and a step up from the Sumo. The blue changes colour depending in the light, and it wears nicely flat on the wrist.
