Jewelry in to USA
Discussion
All,
Appreciate this is the watch subforum but there's probably a lot of you with experience of getting shiny expensive things across borders.
Suggest, hypothetically, someone had a diamond engagement ring made in the UK and wanted it posted to the USA. Also suggest it's been paid for out of a UK bank account with rental income earned in the UK.
How might a person in this situation go about navigating the US customs process?
Purely hypothetical, all advice welcomed.
Thanks

Just declare the value on the export label if you're posting or walk through the red channel at the point of entry if you are hand carrying.
They'll help you navigate the process and tell you how much and how to pay.
The importer pays, so either the person you send it to or the person hand carrying.
Hypothetically.

The issue is, hypothetically, that to send a package insured one must declare the value, which makes any attempts at a misleading packing label futile. Not that anyone would do such a thing.
Is it deliberate that US customs make it impossible to calculate duty on something? Hypothetically, if somebody knew the amount they could make an informed decision.
Hypothetically.

If the duty is substantial, then fly there wearing it, and resize it if necessary after arrival. Hypothetically
