Smaller speedmasters..
Discussion
I'm toying with buying a used speedmaster. Unfortunately I don't really want to spend the cash on a moonwatch as much as I'd like to.
I can stretch to a used automatic. I actually used to own a speedmaster reduced a few years back (I sold it 12 odd years ago). It was a lovely watch but I do remember it being very slightly on the small side , even though I have small ish wrists.
I currently wear a tag Heuer aquaracer which I think is a 40mm watch. It feels like a good size.

These are the two I'm looking at. I think they are both the same size but for some reason the white one looks a bit bigger ?
Will 38.5mm feel too small?

Only you can answer that. I have a Speedmaster Reduced and to me it's a big as I would want to go. I consider anything over 40mm large so I am put off most new watches. The Speedmaster Reduced certainly won't look small under your shirt cuff or whatever. Edited by RichB on Friday 20th December 21:36
Here's my reduced on my tiny 6.5 inch wrist.

I find that when i'm wearing short sleeves it does look comically small, but with a shirt it wears perfect. I think its a really classy watch and my Mrs loves it.
If you're used to 40mm watches this wont feel that much smaller as the pushers make it wear larger than it is.

I’d love a Speedmaster moonwatch, but was always put off by the size and the bracelet which I am no fan of, although I ackowledge having tried one on, they do wear smaller than 42mm. Then I found the numbered edition FOIS which is a smidge under 40mm (39.7?) on a leather strap. If and when to opportunity arises, that’s what I’ll go for.

The two watches are pretty much identical in size it's just the lugs/crown protectors that make the Moonwatch sized bigger. I ended up with a Moonwatch on leather after trying both and I've got small wrists. The hands on the FOIS make it a non-starter for meThanks for all the replies. I'm now looking at a mark II speedmaster. She's an old lady from 1975 and she's obviously not a moonwatch but I quite like the design being a bit chunkier than the reduced/date. And it's half the price of a professional and I reckon will be a good investment.
Anyone got one?

I do not realise that any Speedmaster series have crown protectors?
Don't think they do - maybe a mixup in the terms. The only moonwatch case with semi-shrouded pushers is the 376.0822 but not seen any with a crown guard. richthebike said:
Just saw this is heavily discounted at WoS

Nice. I almost bought the black version. This is a great price! https://www.watches-of-switzerland.co.uk/Omega-Spe...
I like some of the reduced Speedmasters and fair play to people who prefer them and enjoy owning them - but If it’s the Moonwatch you really want, then save up until you can afford it.
I’ve bought cheaper watches before to try to scratch the itch for the more expensive watch I really wanted and it doesn’t work - you’ll end up with a watch you don’t like and be ~£2k even further away from being able to afford the watch you do want.
Call Dom - he might surprise you with his price.

I tried the reduced/racing 40mm co-axial on back in June 19.. I liked it but I didnt love it as I wanted a moonwatch 42mm. Put some money aside until now and I have just bought the moonwatch.. well, on boxing day. Arrived today. Worth the wait!
It should be noted that the Speedy wears smaller than it's size suggests. I have a smaller Planet Ocean that I wear daily as the larger one felt too big and I preferred the bezel on the smaller one but it feels the same size as the Speedy on my wrist.
The Speedy is then watch I always wanted, when everyone was giddy about saving for the first Rolex I lusted after a Speedy, it was a special day when I bought one, the dealer was superb, made sure I was happy with everything then ordered one brand new rather than window stock. When it arrived they called me up, I went in and opened the plastic case it was supplied in from the factory so I was the first to touch it after it shipped, then we both checked it was perfect, he re-sized the bracelet for me, gave me a Moonwatch book and some other goodies then when I went to pay he gave me a discount!
Buy THE moonwatch, you will not regret it!
