So I have done a bit of selling and have around 7.5k to spend on my next watch purchase.

I have the following thoughts

1: wait as I am a list for a non date sub since last year
2: buy a 39mm perpetual and a 007 sky fall planet ocean.
3: buy a Grey market date sub
4: save up and buy a old gmt or Kermit

What do you chaps reckon? I currently have an explorer 2 polar and a couple of cheaper run abouts

Please no seiko suggestions I am far too big a snob for that !

You are aware that the Sub is recognisably the 2nd Divers style watch on the market …..
You don't want to be second do you ???

Sourced grey market new from London

As it was the top of your list, wait for the Rolex Submariner to come your way.

There are too many variables here, do you like new or old? You already have a GMT in your collection via the Explorer II, so I'm less inclined to buy an older 'proper' GMT. Are you going to sit tight and see what may (or may not) happen with new releases at Basel this year and if the Subs pick up the newer calibre with the 70-hour power reserve...

The blachpain are an interesting option but too big at 45mm.

I’m in a similar position cash wise, I’m currently waiting for a perpetual 39mm white face to come in. And with the rest, I’ll get an Omega Speedmaster FOIS. FWIW, I had a ceramic no date sub, and a pre ceramic no date two liner sub. The pre ceramic is, to me anyway, the perfect sub. I absolutely love it. I ended up selling the ceramic sub to fund a ceramic Daytona.

Agreed on the ceramics, I think I prefer the pre-ceramic Sea Dweller as the ultimate "sub" however. You ain't gonna lose on a nice 16600 in that price bracket either OP.

Similar position to you last year after selling my GMT 2 LN and after a few hiccups, settled on a Casino Royale era PO and an Explorer.

Do I regret it? No not really. It’s nice to have two very different watches that are great quality. I do miss the GMT though. So will try and get another at some point.

Yes - £7,500 should get you a lovely "full set" 16600 or a pretty nice 16660, but without box & papers.

Despite being the "better" watch, SD's just don't seem to have gone up in price like Subs or GMT's.

No, they've been lagging behind other sports watches for years and years-I don't really get it?

They did jump when the new Sea Dweller came out, before that a nice 16600 was really only £4.5k but I'm not sure if that was the halo effect of the Anniversary or (more likely IMHO) just a case of a rising tide lifting all boats-by that point all sports models were increasing so the SD went with it.

I've got a mate who wants a long term investment sports Rolex, something to wear every day but pass on in years to come-I keep telling him a 16600 is the one to have, what did he buy? An old ceramic none date sub. Nice enough in it's own right but at £7,300 way over priced.

I to cashed in a Rolex gmt master two last year. Paid bills etc!

Not sure about the heft of a sea dweller but agree they seem relatively good value.

I’ve seen a couple of subs at just above 7.5 with papers that are ceramic

I like James Bond, but that is quite a price jump, and not even an LE. I remember buying a 1997 style seamster quartz watch back in 2003 for around £700. i am not sure this is worth the increase!
