I was given this Rolex Oyster Royal about 30 years ago by an ex girlfriend's dad. His own dad bought it in India in the 1930's I believe and I was told it was the one sat in the bottom of a fish tank because he could see it was working! When I received it, it didn't work, so I had it repaired for about £180 (if I remember correctly) but it now has stopped again. I'm just wondering what it is exactly that I own and what is the likely value, repair costs etc. I'd like to repair it but would need to know if it would be worth it and that genuine parts are used if it is. If this helps, it is actually really quite small as it's about the size of a 2p. Thank you in advance.

At a guess it’s a ref 2280.

I think Rolex used the fish bowl from the 30s to the 60s, the bowls are worth a fortune now £25-£30k.

With a new crystal + service I think that could go for £1.5k to £2k.

Blimey. I'd better get a quote for repair. Knowing my luck it'll cost £1500 to put it right!

If you go to Rolex it will :P

I would imagine the viability of repair will come down to if parts are available or not.

Maybe give https://www.webwatchmaker.co.uk a try he does great things with vintage watches.

or http://thewatchspotblog.com/?page_id=58

Not sure if Anglsea Watches does really old things?

There was a chap on here who said his father in law was a Rolex approved repairer. I can't recall the details.
They were based in Bristol I think.
