Yesterday I popped into a Rolex AD. I spoke with a couple of sales persons and a customer. One of the salespersons had a white dial ceramic Daytona and the customer had a very well worn steel bezel white dial Daytona. They both let me had a look.

The customer was wearing casual clothes and trainers. The steel bezel white dial suited his attire. When I looked at the watched closely it was very underwhelming. The watch does not have enough contrasts. White dial, silver sundials, white gold hands etc.

The salesperson had the new ceramic Daytona with white dial but he was wearing a double breasted suit, shoes and tie. This time the ceramic Daytona did not suit his attire. The watch was too sporty and casual for his suit.

Also both watches in no way looked £20-25k worth. I feel fortunate that I seen both rare watches together because I know for sure that I wouldn’t buy one at the current market value. These were my thoughts a few years ago but I will admit that with social media etc I started looking to buy a Daytona. It is a cliche now but they are fantastic watches at retail but in no way worth or look £20k worth. Sometimes I think the ceramic Daytona looks like a TAG from distance. If I was buying a Daytona I would buy a white gold Panda dial.

I will probably change my mind in a few moths after I’m influenced by social media.

Nobody has worn a double-breasted suit since the 1990s, surely?

Thanks for that. Incisive insights from our roving Rolex reporter.

They've been 'in' for a couple of years now. Personally I think they look silly unless you have the build of Winston Churchill.

Double breasted suits are on the cutting edge of fashion. I'll stick to my fleece though, being middle aged and not thin (or fat) enough for one.

On the more relevant Daytona subject. I wanted one for years, always looked at the photos of various sellers. Bought one, was seriously underwhelmed, couldn't read the time easily (black faced Daytona) and got rid of it.

If it's a itch you need to scratch - buy one and sell a year later - unlikely to lose money on it.

BTW - that Daytona on the right will be a lot more than 25K . Panda Daytonas are probably more in the 50K ++++ range

Let's be honest, not many watches look what they are worth.

I must admit although I appreciate the Daytona, it’s not for me either. Looks amazing in some photographs.

I wish I DIDN’T like them but I do, I do sometimes find them a bit sparkly for me as I’m not a fan of polished centre links but I wouldn’t want to “brush” one including the case!

Some think they wear small, I think that’s relative to what else you’ve been wearing.

I thought it was just me!

I find nothing particularly alluring about a Daytona. My AD guy has one, and I do find myself thinking it looks so dull in a store full of more aesthetically looking pieces that he could probably wangle. They too remind me of some of the cheaper watches I used to have when I was at at school.

I am however eternally grateful for those who do like them, as it means my wait for the ones I do like might just be that little bit shorter!

I had one made for me last year. Admittedly it was the first one I've owned since the 1990s.

I would not wear a Daytona with it though.
