Afternoon

Does anyone have information on the brand Otis?

I’ve been given my late grandfathers watch, it’s not working and I don’t think it’s valuable in terms of money. It looks cool and has the words

Otis deluxe
21
Waterproof
Antimagnetic tic
Swiss made

On the face.

I can’t seem to find much on the entire internet about it.

I think it could be from the 50s or 60s. My grandfather came from northern India to the U.K. in the early 50s and was a salesman before opening a garage. He dressed pretty sharp and I remember him with the watch. Any help appreciated.

I have zero idea, not sure if they were big on replica types back then. I like the style plus it’s my grandads so I’m going to get it working hopefully and wear it..

At a guess I recon it’s Swiss Movt on the dial, so not Swiss made. Likely Swiss movement cased and dialled in India. It looks “Indian” kind of like the Rado watches of that period that seem popular there.

This is not fact but the early Congress/ Janata governments were very keen to tax imports so it would make sense to buy Swiss made movements then add the case value locally. This used to be really common in Europe and the US especially with gold cases.

I would imagine that a Swiss movement was seen as a step up from the all local HMT watches. I can’t see it being valuable maybe £50-£100.
