My house insurance is due for renewal. Since I have multi-car with Admiral, I thought it was worth getting a quote from them. The price seemed reasonable - although it's only pro-rata until my car insurance needs renewing - but I have a concern about the watch cover.

I have two watches that need listing as specific items - one of which is a Daytona, and hence the value is certainly over £10k.

The person giving me the quote didn't question this, but on the Admiral pages even the platinum cover (which is what I was quoted) seems to have a max limit of £10k. So I'm dubious.

I can't see details of the quote online and I don't want to start a policy which isn't useful - although I need to get my watch valued or they probably wouldn't pay anyway!

Does anybody actually have Admiral house insurance and can confirm that the policy covers watches (or other items) over £10k?

When I looked into suitable insurance I only found the Marks and Spencer’s policy

Why don't you ring Admiral? I mean, genuinely, why would you ask the internet something like this rather than the provider?

You'll be asking why anyone wants a watch worth 10k next.

It's not directly answering your question but I recall using Hiscox and they covered higher value Issue items really well.

I did ring Admiral - that's how I got the quote. But I have experienced this once before with another provider - all the call centre people care about is trying to get the business, and when you get the policy it's NOT what you asked for.
If somebody has actually insured with Admiral - and has paperwork confirming a value of > £10k, then that would be confirmation wouldn't it?

I have insured with Hiscox in the past - and will get a quote this year, but their prices went insane a couple of years ago.

I still don't see why you want to seemingly rely on someone from the internet. Admiral might have insured me for up to £20k/item but whether they do for you...

Some troll who hates rolex peeps might reply to stir the st just for their own amusement.

Just ring them back. Ask if they are recording - like they always say they are - (also record it yourself) and ask if your watch is covered.

I’m with Admiral at the mo for home insurance. My Daytona is covered for £17k, but it needed a proper valuation certificate from a recognised dealer. That cost me £78, lasts three years, I think.

As mentioned already, call them.

Thanks. That's exactly the kind of info I wanted.

I intend to get it valued anyway so that's fine.

Tony may i enquire as to the premium as I’m in the market to insure my Daytona also. Don’t worry if you don’t want to share

Not Admiral but Direct Line had a 10k limit when checking online.
Called them and they increased it to 15k with an increase in premium.

Guess it’s a case of getting a sensible and competent person on the phone when you call....

I can’t remember what the watch has added to the premium, but from memory the full building (£330k) and contents (£80k) is about £380 per year. Low ish risk rural Suffolk, no flood risks etc.

Direct line select will cover higher value watches and jewellery too. It’ll just be a listed item on your policy and they may want to see a valuation too. No guarantees they the policy will be a good price though!

without trying to sound facetious, and to be fair I have industry knowledge, but insuring rolexs et al with Admiral and other mainstream insurers is like taking a Ferrari to kwikfit for a service

this isn't being snobby, those policies are mainstream, whereas the assets mentioned above aren't. It's not just IF they will cover them, its the actual policy wording itself. i.e the warranties and expulsions about when and where they are covered (especially when not worn), and how they are valued pre and post lost....and what provisions the policy wordings give to cover the increase in value during the policy term.

I have no axe to grind or product to sell, as I'm a semi retired insurance broker now, but if you have decent watches or jewellery, you need to be talking to an independent broker. Preferably one who specilizing in mid and high net worth insurance policies.

^^^^^ read this.

Also retired from selling home insurances.
Insurance sold off an internet page is designed to be sold on price, not cover, or payment performance.

You need to discuss it with someone. Use a broker as above, or talk to those who sell insurance direct; NFU, Hiscox, Chubb etc.

I have had cover from Hiscox in the past - however, I tried an online quote with them last week and the computer said no - my house clearly doesn't meet the criteria now for some reason.

Whilst I acknowledge the point about Admiral vs specialist / high net worth policies - at the end of the day, my car is insured with them, and that's worth far more than my watch. That was mostly due to limited choice - lack of garage severely limited my options - but since there is more chance of my car being damaged or stolen then my watch I probably will use Admiral for the house insurance too.

I have several specified watches insured on my Admiral multi car & home contents policy, it adds a littl to the premium and there's an admin fee when I add one.
