Buying from Ebay... Genuine... overseas...?
Discussion
Looking at a watch that i'm struggling to source from anywhere local.
Not particularly special but seems to be difficult to get hold off.
It's a Breitling Super Ocean Heritage 2 - but has to be 42mm & have the white face.
Found one listed by a dealer in Japan on ebay.
Feedback for the seller on almost exclusively watches is positive, however the photos are poor.
No response to questions (although only sent in the last 48 hours)
If I take the plunge does ebay cover me if it's not genuine? Will Breitling or a dealer verify it's real once it arrives for me?
Any other safety measures I can take?

Those pictures are crap. Have you googled the seller?
I bought my Speedmaster through eBay and found my PO GMT through eBay (although bought it direct from the jeweler) so I am not against an eBay purchase but doing some due diligence on the seller is a good start.
I bought a vintage watch on eBay years a go which turned out to be a dog and the seller had horrendous reviews on all the watch forums, luckily I got my money back.
Obviously the import cost is going to be significant as well.

Is the import cost not pretty reasonable? I just view it as VAT as that's basically what it is.
It's VAT 20% + Duty 4.7%. 600 quid.Just something to keep in mind comparing costs is all, and something else to sort out if the sale goes wrong for what ever reason. The seller uses DHL so pretty nailed on you will have to pay IME.

Yes have factored in potential charges.
Seller seems to have a website but this watch isn't listed..

If you include taxes, somewhere like this looks cheaper: https://paulgranelli.co.uk/watches/breitling-super...

Yep.. already spoke to them - they can't actually source the watch. devnull said:
Nothing helpful to add, but I've always fancied a superopen with the mesh bracelet. Didn't realise they depreciated like this.
In general they don't really. Landed price of this after tax & duty would be about the lower end of the UK / EU market I think.
My only problem is I can't find this colour combo in many places so being forced to look further afield.

Look in the US. There is a dealer in Florida I see on Chrino 24 that had a few of the blue/white ones. I was considering one myself, but actually I like a watch in a 38mm and so am looking for a Mk1 version
Thanks Harry - yeah I have an alert set up on C24 but at the moment no MkII white faces in 42mm listed at all, there's 3 or 4 mk1s listed however. Dan_1981 said:

While I was googling this yesterday there are lots of comments saying Japan is a good place to buy used because a lot of dealers don't use the internet (apparently) and any wear or marks really affect the value on the local market. So dealers who do market online can get watches at the good local price and undercut other international dealers.Landed price of this after tax & duty would be about the lower end of the UK / EU market I think.

I'd go with your gut of course. I couldn't find any comments about that dealer particularly on places like Watchuseek (you get a lot of noise searching for the name because the terms are common) but buying from Japan seems like a smart move..
Having sold a lot internationally, the problems come if the buyer isn't happy for what ever reason (no s
t!). Being the buyer you have more protection. If it is being sold through the GSP that is even more reassuring. Not that it makes that much difference but there should be no duty on watches from Japan for individual, personal purchases. Well, there is but it’s a flat rate of something like 90p which isn’t collected. I’ve purchased a few from Japan and only been charged VAT on each occasion.
This was certainly the case pre-Brexit but I’m not sure the same arrangement has been rolled over to the new trade deal.

I've bought quite a lot from overseas buyers on eBay and have developed a sort of 6th sense when it comes to reading listings (never a top end watch though) The listing and feedback is not setting any alarm bells to me but the lack of response to questions and more photos is. You would think they would be on the ball when selling a two grand watch.
You are well covered by eBay buyer protection but it can be a hassle when it comes to a claim.
