I have a TAG Monaco and as it’s my birthday coming up soon an idea for an automatic winder was mentioned. Budget is around £50 or so and there are loads around for that price. Lots of conflicting evidence both for and against these type of things. My question is does anybody have one and are they any good or not at this price point, if they aren’t I just simply won’t bother and will continue to wind it up as usual.

I really wouldn't bother, unless you've got something like a perpetual calendar with a moonphase dial that you only wear a couple of days every week. These can be a pain in the backside to keep setting if you allow them the stop.

Winding a watch every day, then not using it, will "wear it out" faster than letting it run down and leaving it stopped when you aren't wearing it.

One could argue that resetting a watch risks more damage to the stem and keyless works etc than leaving it running but each to their own I guess. smile

This - I had a few winders like linked above but was only wearing an auto maybe 1-2days in every fortnight and that was rotating between 3.

I let them “die” and then just set them when wearing them now - works perfectly.

Ah, this old chestnut.

My personal view is that the more work a machine does the quicker it will wear out. A watch is a machine, so why make it work when you aren't using it?

Added to which, I get the impression that a lot of watch winders are not very reliable.

Thanks for all your input and to be honest that’s exactly what I was thinking. Okay that seals the deal I will just carry on winding up my watch as and when I wear it.
