Morning all.
While I am not expecting you , some random strangers on the internet what is best for me to do. I do appreciate reading differing views to my dilemma.
Me and my wife bought a Rolex as a wedding present for myself 6 years ago. The Rolex in question is a 2009 GMT (116710LN) and I paid £4350. With the recent increases , watch finder are selling the same(similar) watch for circa £10500-£11500.
I don’t feel that I should be wearing a watch that is that expensive, it doesn’t really fit/match my lifestyle.
What would you do ? Sell it and buy something cheaper ? Chuck it in the safe and forget about it for a few years ? I love the watch and wear it everyday but could possibly get more use out of an I-watch or g shock and not being worried about what people think.
Sorry for the ramble.

If you like wearing it then keep wearing it.
Most people don't notice or care what watches other people have on.
If you feel unsafe wearing it in some circumstances now that you know what it's worth then a) get it insured and b) get a cheaper watch for when you know you're going somewhere that'll make you uncomfortable.
Unless you really need the cash I wouldn't sell it.

Thanks for everyone’s input.
Do I need the money ? Not necessarily , I am neither rich nor poor but let’s say I got £9k back that’s a lot of money.
I wear it everyday , does it put a smile on my face ? Absolutely.
Safety is a factor, not that I live in a particular rough area. But the stories are worrying.
Wife says sell, but I’ll have to give her half lol. Would I be happier with a R129 SL on the drive and a Sinn/Tudor on the wrist ? Dream would be to own a Pepsi GMT but so far out of reach now.

As a wedding watch, presumably it has some level of emotional attachment that cannot be replaced, and therefore ideally not sold. Not to mention the life experiences you’ve had whilst wearing it in the years since the wedding itself.
You clearly love the watch and like wearing it, which would go a long way to making my decision for me.
If you don’t need the money, then it’s a question of whether you want something more than the watch which could be realised by the sale proceeds. Only you know. But purely in asset terms, it’s likely (but not guaranteed, e.g. investments) that whatever you purchase in replacement will depreciate, whereas the watch will likely appreciate in value. Which is the more fiscally prudent?
In terms of the value, I do understand the anxiety, but life is too short. Insure it properly and wear without fear. It’s still the same watch you’ve always worn.
In terms of fitting a more casual lifestyle (like a g-shock or Apple Watch) and reducing the recognition factor, have you considered swapping the bracelet for a rubber strap like an ‘Everest’? A sportier, more casual and more ‘under the radar’ option. You could even sell the bracelet for a decent sum and enjoy that cash (or give it to your better half). Normally not something I’d recommend as (for me) a Rolex looks best on an Oyster, but as an option it could tick quite a few boxes whilst reducing anxiety.
As you’ve noted, it’s a very subjective, personal decision.

Thanks all.
As I said not desperate for the money , but at double my investment it’s hard to turn down a profit. But I didn’t buy it for an investment, so that shouldn’t come into it.
Pepsi gmt is the dream and has been since a teenager. Fretting about a £10k watch I doubt id ever own a £15/20k watch lol. But a Tudor was the other watch I would probably buy if I sold this.
After checking , the watch is insured on my house insurance. Away from the home etc but only at a valuation of £6k so I obviously have t changed it for a few years. Need to sort that ASAP !
It does have sentimental value and we have some great memories whilst wearing it. Honeymoon, my first daughter being born and a photo of me holding her wearing it etc.
I really do appreciate everyone’s views on this. All my non watch friends say sell , wife says sell , daughters only 5 so she doesn’t care lol

I 100% agree with the above. This is something that cannot be replaced, yes you can sell and buy something else like the Tudor that you’ve mentioned but it just won’t be the same. It’ll just be a watch without meaning, and some cash in your wife’s purse.
If I were you I would keep it forever, and it would be handed down to my son / daughter. Ideally they would treasure it as ‘dads watch’ and it would then also be handed down to their kids etc
For now, just wear it and enjoy it.
Another vote to keep, 100%. Not only do you like the watch and wear it all the time (which is enough justification in itself), it also has huge sentimental value which takes it up a few notches still.
The money you would get from it will gradually be spent on things which, as time goes by, you'll just forget about. The watch, on the other hand, is special.

Reading this I think you would always regret selling it. As I said not desperate for the money , but at double my investment it’s hard to turn down a profit. But I didn’t buy it for an investment, so that shouldn’t come into it.

You didn’t buy it for the investment, you don’t need the money, you love it and you have fantastic memories with it.
Get the insurance right and continue to enjoy it.
