Whilst clearing out a late relative's home I found this on it's own, no box nor paperwork, in a drawer.
Is anyone able to tell if it's a) genuine b) if it is what model and age and c) of any value.
I have not attempted to wind it.
Thank you very much in advance.

1940s (maybe) Oyster I’d be amazed if it was fake

I feel that the notion of 'boxes' and 'papers' or it being in someway not genuine are all extremely wide of the mark.

These are usually called 'cushion case' Oysters.

I think your one is an early one, because it only says 'Rolex Oyster' on the dial.

I've been browsing online and can't find one exactly like yours - this is the closest I've found with reference 2081. You might find a closer match. I think the hands look right, though, which hopefully means it hasn't been too messed around with.

The lugs aren't quite the same, nor is the dial.

I like those old Rolex, they have a really nice art deco look to them. Its a shame they are only small as i would get one.

That's absolutely fantastic information, thank you; yes that one does look very, very similar.
There are numbers on the reverse casing, is this some sort of 'chassis number' (I know....I have no idea what I'm talking about!)?
Should I post a picture of these?

It's probably a serial number and I would say no, but I would probably google them and see if you can narrow down the model number.

There are differences to the one I posted, the lugs are different so probably a different model. What size is the case?

That stretchy? bracelet doesn't suit it IMO.

Also, it looks like the crown isn't screwed down, is that how you found it?

Yes that's exactly as I found it. Is the strap likely to be original? Yes it is a stretchy one.
Huge thanks for all the information, it's appreciated greatly.

A quick update, I have found a serial number checklist online and it looks like it's from 1936.

That's great.

No way that strap is original, if you stretch it out you might find the brand stamped between the links.

It's not ideal that it has been left for a long time with the crown unscrewed, as that will have allowed more dust etc into the movement.

I would carefully consider who you take it too if you want to have it serviced, I am sure there are specialists for these. I would research them. Maybe join a specialist forum or facebook group or something and figure it out properly.

What size is it? It looks in pretty nice condition.

Looking at the lugs I think it might be 2416.

This talking watches might interest you, it discusses these early watches quite a bit.

Sorry I missed the size out, it's around 30mm from outer side to outer side, not including the winder (crown?).
I can see some stamps on the strap, but other than 9ct can't make anything out.
Does 2949 mean anything to you? Other than the sn that's all I can find on the watch itself.
Thank you smile
