Hi All,

I just picked up a GP Laureato - not seen too many on the forum here!

My small collection was missing something at the top/for occasions and having sold a Patek Aquanaut and Royal Oak Chrono last year I really fancied something in the 70's smart sports watch category, but without paying current AP/Patek/VC prices (I actually moved my AP and PP on as I just wasn't comfortable with the hype/value/attention they command these days).

This joins a GMT Master (beater), Hublot Classic Fusion Ceramic (casual) and Omega Seamaster Blue Dial (holidays). First impressions are that it's a superb piece - amazing finishing, great heritage, very slim/comfortable, it dresses up or down very well, and it's very under the radar which is what I wanted.

If someone is looking for something "above" a Rolex/Omega type watch but not quite in AP/VC/PP territory then these are worth checking out. They are SO much better in person, I'd written them off before based on pictures but knew as soon as I saw it in person I had to have it;

I was seriously considering the white ceramic bamford version last year. It seemed very good value for a ceramic watch. I dithered and they sold out.

Love this, what size is it? I know what you mean about the aquanaut, walking around with 50k on your wrist is a worry.

Real world problems and all that, but this and things like the el primero go under the radar more.

Thanks All, really pleased to see this brand getting some love, they seem criminally underrated.

The fact you can pick up pieces like this with a decent discount from list and without much wait really makes me wonder why so many are caught up in the AD games of other brands, there are some great alternatives about if people can be open minded!

That being said the blue is now on a bit of a wait list, circa 3 months unless you get lucky. I guess more and more people are exploring alternatives with PP/AP/VC being as they are now.

Since getting it I have the GP bug and keep finding more of their watches I love the look of, there are some stunning variants of the Laureato and the 1966 is very nice too.

Thank you, this is 42mm. I'd say it wears a bit smaller, perhaps due to the way the lugs curve around along with how slim it is. Wears about the same size as my 40mm GMT Master, and way smaller than my 42mm Seamaster. It gives it quite a dressy feel, rather than out and out sports watch.

The price point thing is interesting, as you say walking around with £50k on your wrist is uncomfortable these days when people are getting robbed at knife point for their watches, etc. There is this angle to it, plus the fact that as my Aquanaut went from being a £20k watch to a £50k+ watch I just enjoyed having it less and less due to worrying about bashing it up etc. Given the choice of Aquanaut or the GP and £43k change it's an incredibly easy decision for me personally (appreciate those with unlimited funds can simply have both and not worry about it but for us mere mortals it's a trade off haha).

Here are a couple of other models from the line which I think are stunning (can tell I am a new GP fanboy ha);

I think you have answered your own question there

The cynic in me might say a few of those people mainly like money as opposed to watches

Never really looked in to GP watches myself though, will have a browse as they certainly look the part (to keep it on topic )

Being open minded and having individual thoughts doesn’t make you look cool on social media though

Wearing something like a GP marks you out as being someone worth striking up a conversation with in my books.

I love it.....beautful watch, my first "proper" watch was/is a GP ChronoHawk. Proper ....... and I have yet to see anyone else wearing a GP......

Yeah I do find people's desperation to buy what other people like quite odd to be honest! It's prevalent in the watch industry, when doing some reading on another forum I noticed a couple of people posting along the lines of "love the GP's, but they don't have the brand recognition of AP". I find it quite sad that some would want to spend their hard earned just to impress other people, that money would be better spent getting help addressing their insecurity that leads to them feeling this way in my opinion. I actually prefer it because people don't know what it is, but to each their own of course!

I bought a Sky Dweller with the profit and that's my daily watch - I like the complications and the very clever, fool-proof design, it's why I bought it.

I am limbering up to buy a Laureato - it may take a few more months to fully persuade myself, but I am getting those familiar vibes of 'want'.

I get similar vibes of want for a Laureato keep looking at them on Mrporter. I also get wavering want vibes for a Blancpain FF but something keeps putting me off, think it is 43mm dial.

That's a hell of watch with a 43mm dial, unless it's edge to edge with zero bezel.
