Hi all, long time lurker here.

At the end of March I'll be celebrating my 40th birthday. My wife wants to buy me something "special" and suggested a watch.

I like nice watches but have never been in a position to be able to afford one previously. I have big wrists and huge hands so I'm looking for brands / models which provide quality and are large/chunky. I have a less than legitimate Brietling Superavenger which looks perfect on my wrist to give some idea of the size of watch I'm looking for.

So can anyone recommend some "decent" brands/models that would fit the criteria, for around £1000 (might be able to push this another couple of hundred)

I'm not averse to a pre-owned watch if anyone know of any decent sites.

Cheers all !

You don't highlight your preference in style ...
Will this be for best ... Maybe a dressier style of watch
Will this be for day to day wear ... Maybe more robust
Do you imagine it being treated roughly ... Maybe more sport or steel style

Rado Ceramic Automatic ??
Despite the image this is all black .. Quality brand .. Automatic .. Large & reasonably unusual without being obnoxious

+1, this watch with the ceramic bezel is a very classy thing indeed.

GMT/Diver? Mido Ocean Star GMT gets great reviews.

Something German, solid and minimalist? Sinn 556i, maybe?

Under budget: if you fancy a chronograph then the bulova Lunar Pilot is worth a look.

Just avoid a new quartz Tag Heuer.

Something by Christopher Ward - if you sign up for the mailing list then you should get a £100 voucher.

Longines suggestions above, a good shout.

Hamilton worth a look too.

Sorry, didn’t have much time to elaborate.

Longines is a proper watch brand with proper history.

Chunky, quality piece and great value.

Happy shopping!

I don't think you can go wrong with the Longines.
Other brands/models worth considering:
Stowa - classic flieger
Glycine - combat sub
Sinn
Ball
Tissot - powermatic gentleman
Seiko - something from the prospex line
Doxa - Sub600T
Fortis - bit of budget creep might be required

and as said above you can get some great watches from Oris, Christopher Ward and Hamilton at this price

Another vote for the Hydroconquest.

I bought the previous version with the aluminium bezel ten years ago and still love it.

I don’t think the new ones with the ceramic bezels can be beaten at the price.
