My son has decided he wants a watch for his prom next week

Any recommendations with the budget he has?

Thanks all

Take him to H-Samuals or Argos and paroose the shelves & catalogues,

Citizen, Seiko, Pulsar, Seconda, Bulova and Accurist are proper watch makers and not 'chinese tat'

Slight budget creep - but all Automatic's .. not quartz

https://www.timex.co.uk/marlin-automatic-x-peanuts...

e-bay ... but quite a few jewellers and watch shops selling new items .. eg

Seiko do some nice automatics in that price range. That would be the brand I would be looking at if it was my money.

Orient Bambino.

Automatic, smart, different colours, can be bought and delivered by Amazon in a couple of days and an ideal first mechanical watch. £120 or so. smile

What type of watch does he want?

At that age, budget, and by next week, you don't have a huge amount of options. He probably won't have much use for a proper dress watch, and he probably won't care about the movement.

You could do some Amazon browsing - https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=automatic+watches+for...
Or just take him down the high street and try some on.

San Martin and Pagani design do a range of homage watches within budget, might appeal?

Citizen Promaster £171on bracelet.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Citizen-NY0085-86E-Armban...
On strap £150
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Citizen-Automatic-Gents-M...
Looks great on a wide range of wrist sizes, not too thick, pretty much bulletproof and will last and you can get it quick! I’ve worn the one on a bracelet with a suit and thought it looked good.
Another option £120

Bearing in mind his age and budget.

If he gets that orient it will be a fantastic contraceptive. Imagine the sort of kid that turns up to a prom wearing that......

Beyond that find him something that suits his personality, if he's outdoorsy/adventurous something along the lines of the orange faced seiko monster style. It's not going to be a particularly high quality/lasting watch.

If he's a bit more sensible then you can get in to a Seiko sports just a smidge above his budget. That will last his lifetime if he looks after it.

Casio g shocks are always good. I wouldn't wear one for a ball, but I'm also not that age. Sartorial elegance is not his prime concern.

If it's going to end up ruined in a few years regardless of quality and he just wants something shiny to draw attention then any looky looky "homage" will do the trick or cheapie shiny watch.

Looking back at when I was that age, I went through a slew of accurate and citizen type watches and they all fell apart to some degree. But the Casio analogue I got for my first day of school around age 5 still works. Likewise the omega seamaster I got at 18 or 21 (forget which) is perfect.

I suppose the takeaway is good quality watches at a cheap price last. Good quality expensive watches last. Cheap watches that look expensive don't. My suggestion if your willing to help him a little though is a Seiko skx007 or similar. Will genuinely last a lifetime and is a nice starter watch person watch, without making him look like a Berk.

Does he want to 'flex' a Rolex copy ?

If so, paroose eBay:

Daytona homage https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/304532018761

Sub homages, 60 quid for 3! https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/224980141248

A smidge over budget but even as we speak I'm wearing a Seiko 5.

https://amzn.eu/d/dx6gqYr

Will work with any outfit but is a nice enough watch.

Really? confused

It's hardly the Will McKenzie of watches. laugh

He's going to a prom so something slim and smart suits the bill rather than something for shark-diving on the Calypso.

He'll likely want a fashion watch, rather than a watchmaker's watch. They all seem to be wearing Armani watches these days, which are st but it's a name they all recognise.
