Hello, my Omega Speedmaster professional has started making odd noises. When i wind it the last one third has started sounding and feeling a lot like i am using a pencil sharpener, does not make "scratchy" noise every time i wind, so its become a "Do it or don't it" situation. Watch is keeping excellent time and all functions work. Purchased 2017. It is 'rotated' with my other watches and so only sees service about every six months.
Do i need to get it serviced, or am i worrying unduly?
Thanks for viewing.

My speedy doesn’t get scratchy and feels smooth/consistent right up to the stop point of the wind.

Sounds unusual - I’m guessing the watch is winding fully - you’re getting the full power reserve?

Depending on when in 2017 it was purchased, it could still be under warranty if it had the 5 years? I’m not sure when that came into effect but my 2019 has 5 years.

It could be simply the case that you're fully winding the watch and the 'scratchy' feeling is the safety mechanism to stop it being over-wound.

I have a Rolex that does this - buttery smooth until it hits being fully wound, then you can feel it.

This is what I was thinking too. Let the watch wind right down and then start winding it up. Does it feel smooth then? You might be over winding it.

Don’t think the speedy has a safety system , when mine is fully wound there is resistance at which point you stop

No safety system on the 1861/1863, so it should resist winding when fully wound. Could be a broken mainspring. That might feel like it wnds normally until the break comes under tension, then it slips because the end of the spring that hooks onto the barrel has snapped off. If that's the case it'll keep winding forever. If it still reaches the end of the wind, it probably just needs a good service.

I would live with it until the next service is due, providing there's still enough power to provide a useful day of wear.

I would continue with it if winding it sounds like a pencil sharpener , further damage may be caused

Hello, Omega Speedmaster update,

Than you everyone for your comments and suggestions, much appreciated.

Went to the AD that i bought watch from, J.J. Rudell, Wolverhampton today (19/07/2022). Saw nice salesman who was very concerned, he called over the in-house watchmaker, who listened to noise and suggested noise was a 'dry' seal on the winder tube. He said "if you can wait a few minutes i will have a go at lubricating the seal."
Four minutes later he returned with watch - problem gone. Excellent service and F.O.C. !! One very happy Omega owner.

Great result.

I thought this type of customer service had all but disappeared, but good to see it still exists.
