After a family day in the big smoke and gazing longingly through the bulletproof windows of the watch shops in regents street, I thought I’d have a look at the websites of some of the names I’d not really heard of… and I was shocked!

You always see tags and breitlings at £25/30k in the windows of places, but price tags of £50/60k bends my mind. Then I went on the net!

Roger Dubois sell a watch a £1.24M, and have a fair few choices at 500-800k! I mean, who in their right mind buys these things!? Regardless of massive wealth, I think I’d struggle to swallow them prices!

I think when things become a certain price, not just watches, the purchaser really needs to have a look at themselves and the world we live in. No issues with people being wealthy, capitalism has brought medicines and technological advances but there has to be a limit.

These guys would probably be in receipt of some of my cash should a big Euro win come in.

I know a Swiss banker who flew to USA, collected a "7 figure" watch and wore it on a flight back to EU for a client. Wearing it avoided a shipping import tax bill, I believe.
The client bought him a Mercedes to say thank you.

So what's the limit then?

I’m clearly a peasant.

Anything over the standard fair of Patek etc, and they’re bloody costly to start with, tend to leave me utterly cold, there’s a tendency for them to look like the cheap quartz stuff that you can buy in a garage. I’m not sure I get it.

There's a number of footballers for whom 1.2 million is probably a weeks wages at this point.

I got as far as trying on a Rolex Double Red Sea Dweller once. It was a lovely example and sat very well on my wrist without looking too "Rolexy" if you know what I mean.

Unfortunately the price was then mentioned (£35,000) and SWMBO gave me the look that promised death in a slow, painful and tormented way so I put it back in it's box and stuck with the Bremont I had gone to pick up.

Stupidly expensive watches are a great way to get yourself mugged these days and really should be left to those who travel with their own security team in my opinion.

You'd have to have one specially enlarged shirt cuff.

Good article in the Sunday Times about this a couple of months ago...young attractive eastern european ladies targeting old wealthy guys in nice cars at Golf clubs etc. Pound to a penny they generally had a nice watch aswell and the scam was that they would rush upto them asking about a survery and try to shake their hand whilst simultaneously slipping the watch off the other hand. I guess if you are wearing £35k it's a nice easy win for them even if they don't get that back from the sale. Must admit I'd be scared to wear one as a daily myself. A mate of mine has a large Rolex collection (lucky him) and they just sit in his safe unworn. Quite sad in a way that they are nothing more than investments but they are doing very nicely for him that way I guess.

These sanctimonious replies are so predictable on PH and I'm fairly certain most people would do the same thing in the situation.

I pay plenty of tax and don't have a problem admitting that I would do the same thing.

I'd rather the very rich keep spending, so the money filters down to those making the goods or providing the services, no matter how frivolous. It doesn't help anyone sat in an offshore bank account.

I have a mate with one of these, I think they are about £150k, he has a modest watch collection but this is a stunner, I'd never wear it as I would be too afraid to leave the house with it but he wears it like i wear a G Shock

My theory is it's more to do with investment opportunity. For example, a limited Edition Rolex that costs £65k today may be worth double that in 2 years time.

I love my watches but I just don’t get the Uber expensive watches.
I worked for an Arab family at one time and the boys loved the tasteless expensive watches.
The father wore a gold Rolex date just.

Ditto Not that I'm in the 7 (or even 6) figure watch buying club.
