My wife has a Patek Philippe Calatrava left to her by her father many years ago, and has been sat in our safe ever since. The watch has no documentation, has a box, although the lining is disintegrating a bit. We are looking at selling, but wondering the best way of going about this.

We have got a couple of quotes from specialists for servicing, ranging from a few hundred to around £1000 from an official Patek agent. There's then the further costs of getting the paperwork replaced.

As non-watch people, what are our options? Sell 'as seen', or get it serviced and documented, then sell?

Any advice gratefully received....

That is a beautiful watch. Why don't you wear it and enjoy it for a bit before selling? After all, it has such family connection.

If you're going to attempt to sell privately then an official service and replacement paperwork would probably be a good investment. A service (providing there is no additional work or parts), a new strap and a request for archive paperwork would run you close to £1400 on a Calatrava and you could maybe expect £6500 or thereabouts back on it although it's not necessarily a massively in demand model.

I'd probably look at selling to a dealer such as Dom mentioned above.

That's what I would do. I've sold a few watches via Dominic. Some with all papers and boxes and in mint condition and some not quite so good. In my experience he will give you an honest evaluation.
