The time had come to sell my Moonwatch.

After speaking to PH mates Bobberoo and leglessAlex - both more experienced then me in watch buying and selling - the options as I saw them were, sell privately, sell at auction or sell to a dealer. I felt the problem with selling privately would always be authenticating the watch, so that was abandoned.

I've used SAS Auctions in Newbury before for different things but their fee is 20% plus VAT.

leglessAlex introduced me to dealer Dominic Hackett. I said as the current price for a Moonwatch with a leather strap is £7,200, I felt my 2014 in fine condition would be worth about half, say £3,500. Dominic explained that my watch was from two generations of Moonwatch ago and he sells examples like mine for £3,500. He offered me between £2,700 and £2,800.

In the unlikely event a bidder went to £3,500 at auction, the fee plus VAT would be £840, leaving me £2,660. Selling to Hackett Watches seemed like the way to go. I went to his office in Hatton Garden, met him - lovely bloke - talked watches and cars and he transferred £2,800 to me then and there. Marvellous. And I had a pint in the Mitre. An all-round good experience.

Gone.

Missed a bit.

RRP in 2014 was £2,810.

I paid £2,400.

Sold, 2026, for £2,800.

Painlessly.

To a dealer.

I’ve not found anyone better. I’ve sold him a couple of watches and some other jewellery and he is faultless every time.

My ‘go to’ if I want to sell something. He has also got me discounted deals on new items as well.

Almost spat my tea out when I read a Moonwatch on a leather strap is over £7k these days!
Was yours the sapphire model? I see the least expensive hesalite version is just over £6k new.

Yes, it was hesalite.

The purchase was interesting. I'd been back a couple of times and they didn't have one with a leather strap. I suggested that if they got one in for me they had a guaranteed sale and could therefore, I argued, give me a discount. The young lady helping me was a bit insulted and stopped helping. But as I left I was intercepted by a chap my sort of age, coming up to retiring, who said he couldn't help overhearing and was sure he could do something. About 15% off IIRC. Worth asking.

I’ve sold expensive watches on Ebay over the last couple of years.
Authenticity guarantee, top protection both ways. Free.
Private seller - zero fees
Top price achieved (sold buy it now, at the price I wanted. Way way higher than dealer offered!)
No problems at all.

I sold a watch using the authenticity guarantee, and the process did indeed work well.

How did you send the watch to the authenticator? I used the eBay label but that only covered loss up to £750 and there was no other alternative that eBay would consider legit.

Ultimately my watch was worth £1600 and decided to chance it, but I'd have definitely been a lot more concerned if it was a £5k watch.

I've sold a couple of watches too on Ebay via the authenticator, when it was a free service, used RMSD for delivery to the authenticator, it was Ebay's problem after that.

Good feedback from both buyers, and achieved good prices.

If I took a watch into Hackett I'd just come out with a different one!
