Hi all, I'm looking for some advice on a potential watch purchase please.

Unfortunately we lost my Dad last week. He was always into his watches, and my Mum has mentioned she would like to do something with his watches to remember him by. Rather than selling his watches to buy something more suitable, I was considering getting her a watch as a gift from my brother and I. She can then keep his watches in their display case.

I have extremely limited watch knowledge, and was looking for advice on where/how to buy a watch and make sure I'm buying a proper one please. If anyone is keen to give me some advice, it would be greatly appreciated.

I know he had a Rolex or two, but his favourite watch was his Omega. Using a bit of Google reverse search, I'm pretty confident it was a Omega Seamaster Professional Diver 300m. I'll try and attach a photo but it's been a few years since I've Pistonheaded.

I believe I can get my Mum a smaller version of that same watch - in 28mm? Once again, I'm pretty confident my Dad's is the 41mm.

Specifically, I'm looking at this one on eBay, but even with the guarantees I'm wary of eBay.

Is this a reasonable price for this watch? Anything specific to look out for? Or is there another retailer I should use first?

Thank you very much in advance for any advice. Please do correct me on anything and everything above, you can probably tell I'm out of my depth here!

Sorry for your loss. Losing a parent is not easy, and you are making a lovely and thoughtful gesture for your mum.

The current market price for that watch according to WatchCharts is quite a bit lower than the £1,600 that listing is asking for - see here: https://watchcharts.com/watch_model/4641-omega-sea...

You could use that as a good data point for negotiating.

28mm would be the correct size for a ladies watch.

I have personally not used eBay for buying a watch, but I have heard their guarantee is pretty solid if there's an issue. The most popular online market place for watches is Chrono24 - on some watches, they offer their own certification service to guarantee authenticity - you can use the filters at the top of the search results page to filter for "Certified". Here is a search results page for certified 28mm Seamasters. You'll see quite a few of these watches are not in the UK - it's fine to order from overseas, but bear in mind you'll need to pay shipping and also import duty etc - so a UK seller would usually be preferred.

Finally, if you want to buy directly from a trusted UK dealer/company, Watchfinder is very reputable. Here are their 28mm Seamasters. (Note I have set the filter to "Watchfinder stock", as they do have some third party reseller stock on their site). They are usually pretty open to negotiating so you'll have a good chance for a discount.

A lot of watch collectors say you 'must' have original watch box and papers (i.e. manufacturer authenticity certificate from when it was purchased), but this is not absolutely essential, especially if you don't plan to resell it. In this case, the box is probably more important than the papers as it will give you something nice to present it to your mum in!

Good luck and sorry again for your loss.
