Well, looking for small'ish (38mm) divers watch for my son (he's 11).

Was set on Seiko SKX013, 023 or similar, but just discoverd the citizen promaster.

Seems a bargain.

any horror stories?

If i'm not mistaken, this is a copy of the Seiko who did the origional.

Even the Seiko one is very slightly different from their origional. You can still get the black bezel or the blue and red one.

I prefer the Seiko and have a had a couple amoungst my collection. They are the origional and slighty better in my opinion.

They also come in Auto or Quartz.

I have no business being in this forum as I'm a watch dumbkopf, but as I've stumbled in shouldn't a divers watch say 'Diver's 200m'? My Promaster does anyway.

Aside from the strap flaking out after a couple of years mine's been fine since 2000...

:checks watch:

...oh st no it isn't. 2nd hand is moving 2 seconds at a time. Time for a new battery methinks!

I have got that citizen (but with pepsi bezel) and the quality seems fine, the dial lume is a bit weak and the Seiko dial is the nicer out of the two, bezel has a nice action and not much slop. For £45 slightly second hand I consider it a bit of a bargain, certainly cheaper than the Seiko. Stick it on a nato style strap and it will be pretty much loss proof too.

A pic to show the lume, this is really as bright as you can get it to go, long exposure to show it as well.

Any idea where best to look for a second hand one of these?

I got it from TZ-UK but because they are no where near as popular as the seiko ones they don't come up that often, If you want one now your best of getting a new one.

Well, I couldn't decide, so I bought one of each.

Seiko 5

and Promaster

Got both for £135! Two automatic diver's watches for less than it cost me to get my Rolex serviced!

Go figure!!

Didn't think that Seiko 5 was under 40mm?

I think I like the Citizen more, seeing them side by side.

When I was working at the RN Dive school we had both of these on trial, the old milsubs had been phased out, we had a small batch of seiko's that were to be discontinued, the CWC auto' things never really cut the mustard & even though they got approval I never saw one issued. In the end as a short term fix the Navy bought small batches of both Seiko & Citzen models which were issued without NSN's for about 4 years before the CWC quartz model got signed off which is still current. For the record I got one of the Citizens issued and it's never missed a beat, never been serviced, & still holds great time. It's now over 20 years old and although my Seamaster is by far better looking and cosmetically made there is no way I can fault the citizen, apart from the glass appears to be amde of cheese and has lots of scratches.

Thread necro: talk to me about more recent Seiko Prospex vs. Citizen Promaster watches.

How do their quality feel, fit and finish compare? Also, how do their look and feel compare to something like a Steinhart Ocean?
