I'm surprised that Casio haven't got a dedicated boys range
When I was a kid, if I had wanted a G-shock and somebody bought me the kids version it probably wouldn't have gone down too well. Kids aren't interested on the more sensible option designed for kids, they want the full adult version with extra functionality they have no use for. The same as you and me
Well, according to the Casio site: "Tough and Cool. G-Shock’s unique tough design condensed into a compact feminine form. Stylish toughness expressing cool individuality, G-Shock for ladies."
And "feminine form" makes me think "Tena lady".

I would buy him a standard size G Shock, not an oversized one. {not ProTrek etc}
ProTreks are not G-shocks.Just get a standard G-shock he'll grow into it, of course the more gadgety features the better. A bit like when a kid wants a penknife a sensible one will be passed over for one with every conceivable feature even if you don't know what it does, or how to use it and most importantly don't have the object it's meant to be used on.
