My planned next purchase around that price (well, £280):

Should add that I know nothing about watches, so if you suspect that this is the opinion of an idiot then you're probably right!

My Tissot has been back on warranty claims 4 times. Don't even wear it anymore.

My experience has been very similar, which is a shame as it was my 21st birthday present so I can't even sell it and buy something better.

A real shame, as it is a lovely thing when it is working...

Almost the same here, got my T-Touch for my 18th, by my 19th it was on its way back for the third time.

I now have a Seiko Velatura that has never skipped a beat.

I know neither are really amongst the echelons of the timepieces usually discussed here but everybody has to start somewhere.

Apologies for the picture sizes as well, never know how to get them the right size.

Seiko make some of the best built watches pound for pound out there and they're very well regarded amongst those who know, it seems that most people on this forum have either owned one or own more than a few biggrin Sure, you see them in just about every jewellers on the High Street and therefore may seem a bit 'common' but they really are worth a look.
Generally though, I think that you'd be unlucky for *any* watch to fail, regardless of brand, unless it's being used in conditions it really wasn't designed for.
Try loads on - it's good fun - and see what you like smile

Oh, and post a pic when you've chosen!

I know 2 blokes in work who wear these daily (one like yours, and one with a blue face), and they've not had any trouble at all with them.

It's a nice watch. Chap at work has the blue face on the bracelet and hasn't had any problems. I've had a quartz Tissot since about 1998 and it's been faultless.

Do you definitely want a quartz or would you consider a mechanical movement?

My Tissot has been plodding on steady for 35+ years;

...and wasn't much more than the new one in the OP.

As debaser says - is quartz/mechanical important to you?

Also, if your hearts set on that and you're going through ebay just be aware - http://forums.watchuseek.com/f62/how-spot-fake-tis...

Tissot are a shadow of their former selves. Re-positioned by Swatch and now stretching the 'Swiss Made' criteria to the very limit. Id avoid them myself, unless youre going for the Valjoux movement mechanical chronograph; and Id even wan that cheap.

I have an older PR100 dive and its so different in quality to current Tissot products, that its insured against a Longines Hydroconquest automatic. The watch itself appears to be equal in finish to an older TAG-Heuer 4000 automatic that I have - only the bracelet is inferior, and only slightly.

Tissot is a strange brand to me, they charge some "premium" (relatively, in terms of high street watches) prices, but yet I struggle to associate premium cost with the brand..

Am I alone in this?

Tissot was a premium brand. You need to look back.....

I think so, yes. If you look at Andys watch above, or my professional diver, then youll see excellent watches at the keener end of the quality Swiss watch market - now Swatch have repositioned them at the 'entry level' (for which read sh*te, barely legally qualifying as 'Swiss made') end of the market, where they offer seemingly poor value for money.

The only decent watch that they appear to offer now is the mechanical chronograph; which costs £800-odd.

Christopher Ward was mentioned above, the C7 chrono is similar to that Tissot http://www.christopherward.co.uk/chronographs/c7sk... It would be worth waiting for their sale, or at least getting a discount code (as always, Google is your friend). I got that very watch for my BiL last Christmas and he's very happy with it, I got 20% off IIRC. If I was spending £250 - £300 I'd be looking at a non chrono automatic, something like a Hamilton. Ernest Jones stock them, they had some in the sale for under £300 when I was looking in the Bristol branch yesterday.

I have one of the early T-Touch models - must be more than five years old, never had an issue with it. Having said that, I don't wear it often - more a gadget/talking point than a nice watch.

Junkers 6500-5.

Similar size, colours, black leather strap, chrongraph.

However, it is not a quartz, it has the very well respected Russian Poljot 3133 movement.

On the plus side, it never needs a battery, on the downside it is hand-wind, so you have to give it a wind every morning while you ar eating your cornflakes.

Also it is more expensive at £319.

I know which I would have and it's not the Tissot.

http://www.thebestoftime.com/junkersju52chronograp...

The same site also does Zeppelin quartz chronographs with a Swiss ETA quartz movement which are cheaper.

Or how about a HERC GLITTERATI CHRONOGRAPH WATCH 2128BK USD84.99 with a Japanese Miyota OS20 Chronograph Quartz Movement
