I'm a pretty active person, and I've been buying normal non-expensive watches up until now which I break pretty much annually, so I'm thinking about spending a bit more and getting something nice which will last.

My requirements are:
Less than £500
Very Tough
Tough enough to be dropped onto a concrete floor from a height
Happy on my wrist when I'm windsurfing, but also when I'm wearing a suit at work.

That's it really. I've been looking at G-shocks as some of the analogue versions seem quite nice, but the missus thinks they're all ugly (I think they're ugly in a good way, but she's a girl).

I'm a watch nooby, so I'm hoping you guys can come up with some good suggestions!

Cheers!

I wear my Omega most of the time & wear a G Shock when running, MTBing or other similar activites where there's any danger of losing or damaging my Omega. Also means I have another watch if one needs a battery or service etc

G Shock.

If you somehow manage to break one whilst wearing it, the watch will be the least of your worries!

I'd be surprised if you couldn't find one that suited you looks wise - they're not all butt ugly.

Depends if you think a G-Shock looks OK with a suit or not from your point of view.

The Suuntos are a bit sleeker but even bigger - I'd maybe take a look at their (Suunto) newer Elementum range or failing that there're some good Cores that may be the best compromise.

ETA - beaten to it.

Hmmm suunto core - I'll check it out. I quite like the look of the suuntos I've seen, some of their sailing watches are truly epic!

If you pick up an 'ugly' G-Shock for 50 quid or so, you can spend the rest of your 500 quid budget on a 'pretty' watch for when you're not being Dangerous Brian. wink

I once tested a G-Shock with the ball end of a ball pein hammer. 12 hits direct on the face glass, not even a crack. I had to batter st out of the back of the watch to even get a reaction. Took a he'll of a lot to kill it! So, as said before; if you break the watch, it's the least of your worries!

The elementums are very very smart. Need to see one in the flesh though because I know that suunto have very large faces. Anyone know where they're stocked?

I was actually worried about their size so tried a core on in field and trek on the high street the other day. They don't look THAT big when they're on.

Oh, hang on - I didn't spot the part about the £500 budget,

That being so, I'd be looking at a G-Shock at circa 50-80 quid, and spending the rest on a something else to compliment it.

ETA: are the Suunto's as hardcore as G's??

That's kind of what I want to avoid though - I want to be comfortable wearing my watch whatever I'm doing. I'm not sure I'd be happy having my omega in the changing rooms while I'm out on the water, and if you can't wear it all the time then losing it becomes a distinct possibility.

I'm after a rugged tough watch that looks nice and passes the wife test smile. Collegues at work say that their tags, omegas etc are pretty tough, but anything cheaper comes with a metal strap and clasp, and I've had one of those get caught on a rope and get ripped off my wrist.

That might be the best plan - only problem then is that I cycle to work, so would still need to be a tough hundred quidder that I can wear with a suit at a ftse100 sized company biggrin not making this easy am I!

Lol :Dwell, not very often, but my lifestyle means that my watch is likely to get knocked about.

Out of interest (having never owned one) how tough are the entry level watches of the major brands (tag, omega etc)? Could you comfortably take one off your wrist and toss it across the room? If you can then that's probably enough. I've broken two previous watches doing significantly less than that you see...

I wouldn't chuck my PO across the room.

My G-Shock, most definitely.

Any chance you could stretch the budget to a Sinn u1?

Very, very tough. Smart enough for formal wear too.

Brilliant. biggrin

Well, I was under the impression that you could really wear any watch if you don't mind it getting scratched but today I had an interesting surprise. Went for a move on a climbing wall, smacked wrist against wall, heard clunk of dress watch on Nato hitting hold, didn't think anything of it (didn't care if it broke). Then heard call from below, "Is this yours?"

Turns out, the impact had popped off BOTH (brand new) spring bars, the watch fell about 5 metres, the back popped off, the plastic movement holder popped off and the battery popped out. So, it's G-shock or bare wrist from now on as none of my Gs that have had a similar impact have done anything but accepted a scratch.

As for the others... Sinn rofl well, anyone for Watch Conkers? Or simply a G-shock test:

Oh, and no, they're not attractive but it depends on whether you like rugged looks or not I suppose.
