Deciding on a spare watch instead of my Senna Tag.

Anyone any experience of these? This is the one I like -

From what I've heard the sensors ain't very accurate but it certainly looks the part.

Thanks

Whilst I appreciate watches are very much a personal thing when it comes to looks, I just do not understand the appeal of these for a daily beater. It would be like wearing a dive computer on your wrist in the office.

Some practical advice on them though: The compass is at best useful for giving you a rough idea of the key compass points - useless for more accurate navigation than that; The altimeter like all baro-altimeters will never be remotely accurate unless you calibrate it several times a day off a datum point; Temperatrure readings are greatly affected by body heat. Buy with this in mind.

You'll also struggle get a shirt cuff over one.

If you want an outdoors watch, I would personally be looking in Suunto's direction as their watches are far nicer ergonomically, which is what counts with this sort of watch IMO. They're also much subtler looking.

I've had a Protrek for the last couple of years. Fantastic watch. Each year I go to the Alps, I check its altimeter readings against the elevation signs as we drive up. It's always within 5-10m of these and I've never had to recalibrate it from new. The compass is equally as accurate, comparing to the one on my friends 14m sailing yacht smile

As they depend on barometric pressure for their calculations then they are entirely dependent on what the current BP is, and in the UK this can change massively over the course of the day. It's how the storm warning feature on some of these watches works.

For accuracy you DO need to calibrate them. I can see a difference of 50m over the course of week on a casio and a garmin altimeter. Perhaps you've been lucky that the BP in the alps when you checked was close to what it was originally set at.

Re the compass - yes they point north with reasonable accuracy, but try actually navigating with one. They are at best a guide, and should be considered as such.

ETA out of curiosity I've just fired up my Garmin GPS60csx - which uses a baro altimeter - before the GPS signal corrected it, it was showing me at -2m when the our house is at 58m ASL.
