I have been thinking about buying a Rolex for years and am now in a position to do so at last but first I have a couple a questions:

1) SD and Sub look very similar, main difference is the working depth of the SD and the fact that it is now discontinued - is this correct?
2) Is it worth paying the 'premium' that SDs now command due to their somewhat 'rarity'?
3) I had my heart set on a SD but I really like the new black ceramic GMT-Master II, it has thrown a real spanner in the works! I know it is a completely different watch (air vs sea) but what are your thoughts? I understand it to be both lighter and more comfortable to wear on a daily basis that the SD...

Any other thoughts/comments/advice would be much appreciated...

Thanks

Neil

Having had all three of the watches you mention, I would definitely choose the one you haven't i.e. the new ceramic Sub. Much better build quality than the old Sub (bezel and bracelet in particular), sits nicely on the wrist unlike (IMO) the SD which is a bit top heavy, and a diver (not now a fan of GMTs).

Edit: forgot to mention the new DeepSea SD - but that is a different ballgame both in terms of outlay (although used examples are on the slide)and size.

This, I've had the black 16610 Sub, the 16610LV (Green) and now the new Cermic Sub.

The ceramic is the absolute nuts, bracelet in particular is a vast improvement.

Certainly wouldn't pay a premium for an old style SD!

And another vote for the new ceramic sub. I currently have a 16600 SD and a 116610LV and the sub beats it in so many ways. It's better balanced, more comfortable on the wrist, the bracelet's better, the bezel is better and to be honest when I put my SD on the other day after wearing the sub for a week it looked rather unimpressive in comparison.

Nothing wrong with a nice 'No Date' sub though. smile

Edit: Oh and I'll be putting my SD up for sale soon. PM me if you're interested.

The clasp on the older watches is a nasty tinny affair. I've got a 16610 sub and very rarely wear it now after buying one of the newer watches with the improved clasp. The deepsea is too big IMO for mere mortals, all the others can be worn under a cuff.

Thanks guys, keep the posts coming!

The new ceramic Sub is model 116610LN?

How much will one of these set me back, is RRP £4,650?

I've had a GMT, SD and various Subs.

Out of them all I prefer the GMT best and it's the one I still have. I like the bezel (Pepsi) and the neater winder. I found that the SD sits a little taller than I'd like (although I'm sure I'd be prepared to put up with it for if I came across a reasonable Double Red!)

It's really a matter of personal taste though and you'll be getting a good piece whichever you pick

Cheers -JP

What was the retail price of the Sea Dweller before it got discontinued?

U find it on the net now anywhere from 4300 to 4900 pounds.

Love the watch, but dont wanna pay for it more than it cost new!

Cheers, guyssmile

that would be quite entertaining, I'm a believer in wearing and knockin the granny out of a watch. Worrying about it's value must always be secondary to getting aesthetic pleasure from it.
