What ho chaps, need some advice from the assembled.

In days gone by, I wouldnt need to ask as my default has always been a Breitling Navitimer chrono. Alas, now that Breitling have stopped being watchmakers and become a sub brand of Bentley it is no longer possible to wear them. This is annoying as a Navi has always been a good looking watch and if you work in the aviation industry it was taken as read that you could actually wear one on merit. Now though it just looks like you are another accountant or consultant on the make.

So, aswell as my generic perusing, I went and had a decent nosey along Bahnhoffstrasse this afternoon for whatever caught my eye. Now I have problem with most watches, in that nowadays they seem to go hand in hand with Astons and Bentleys and that "bling is in". Unfortunately whilst bling might well be in with people who wear shiny suits and the bigger the better captures the market place, I loathe big chunky watches. They look horrid, they feel horrid and they are simply uncomfortable and irritating to wear. So that discounts 90% of watches on the market. I then happened across the Chopard store and cor blimey gov there wasnt half a gorgeous watch on show.

Alas here my knowledge endeth for I was on a scurry back home cos it was getting a bit nippy and I was getting hungry, so didnt have time to pop in. Being Zurich of course doing anything so consumer friendly as actually labelling or providing any info whatsoever on...well anything actually, there was zip about the watch. From a little research all I can tell you is it looked like an even more minimilist L.U.C XPS.

Can any of our experts shed any light on what it was I saw and in what bracket of POA it comes in, i.e. c £1k, £5k, £10k or £really, dont be stupid k ?

Aside from the mysterious Chopard, what other decent non-tttish watches are there around that may convey that the owner, A)doesnt have a poncy watch collection, B)doesnt hang around on watch forums, C) doesnt own an Aston or Bentley, D) isnt an IT contrator or an accountant? Oh and E) isnt Soovy.

I think you just reduced your chances of getting a good response by that... hehe

Well, buy the most expensive Tissot. Nobody in his right mind would do it and it's certainly not something A or B would have... nor C, D and E.

U-BOAT!

Are you referring to a Chopard LUC XP as a minimalist alternative to the XPS?

I don't think anyone who drives an Aston or Bentley would opt for a U-Boat, surely?

No, Royal Navy submarine only, I imagine... wink .. probably one that has been run aground ...

To the OP, it may be difficult to meet your requirements A) and B) but if you like the look of the Chopard LUC XPS you should look at JLC, perhaps the base Master Control? Under-stated, stylish (imo) and a true manufacture (as is the LUC of course).

Re. pricing I think the LUC watches start around 5K and head up from there.

The JLC looks good and is the fairly minimalist style that I like, ta for the pricing info on the L.U.C.

As to A) and B) reducing my chances of an answer, well I refuse to believe Im the only chap who just wants a decent watch to wear. One. Not a different one for every day of the week, or which one will match which suit or how it appears if I photograph it in a different manner. Just a sodding decent watch which a chap can buy, that does its job as a watch, looks good, will last and provides something of a gift that you may deem worthy to pass down to any brat you might have one day.

So keep your "classic" Breitling, if they have gone trendy it won't be long before they go out of fashion again.

biglaugh I could have quoted all of your post but this bit made ma laugh and is oh, so true!

Spot on about the jumbo oversize clocks people wear these days, "clowns watches" I believe they are referred to... wink

p.s. I wear a JLC from the late 90s, I suggest you go second hand. Something like this... 37mm case and very classy.

Are you saying a professional footballer would never be seen wearing a U-boat?

Zenith Chronomaster. JLC dress watch. Dornblüth 99.1. IWC Portuguese. Lange Saxonia. Etc.

However, the tttery is rarely anything to do with the watch, so success is not guaranteed.

Better take the Dornbluth out of that. I have a collection that some might call poncy, but I certainly hang around watch forums.

Something understated but quite remarkable in terms of horological engineering about Zenith.

Thing is, people can suggest you buy X and it sounds like an amazing idea but then you really want Y. So you buy X and hate it, eventually sell it for a big loss, and buy Y in the end.
