Hi guys.

I've never worn watches , but I want to start. I'm after a smart dress watch and have a budget of £300.

I've looked in the high street shops and quite like the Armani ceramic range, but there's something bugging me about buying a watch from a clothes designer!

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

Your suspicions are correct. Now, what style do you like? Post some stuff up and we'll recommend decent brands to you.

If you're happy to buy used then that will open up a whole range of stuff you might not previously have been able to consider. As suggested, post up some pics of what you like and see what suggestions come back.

Thanks for the replies.

I've only just started looking, but I think the rectangular cases look smarter than the circular and as i'm after a dress watch, i'm thinking thats the way to go.

I also like black faces instead of white etc.

When it comes to straps, i'm undecided over metal or leather.

Here's the Armani i said i liked earlier-

For your buget and if you want new, I would go for a Tissot PRC200 (chrono for me - can be had circa £230 new on a bracelet but available without chrono for the cleaner look, or on a strap)

AND

A Seiko diver (Monster or 007/009 circa £130 new). Although these are not rectangular, the Seiko makes a good beater and the Tissot is a smart watch that goes well with either a suit or jeans IMO.

Both come from recognised watch manufacturers and both highly rated.

Second hand opens up a whole host of other options though, take a look on TZ-UK's sales corner for other ideas. Good luck with the search, thats half of the fun!

Sorry to distract you from your prefered rectangular case, just my 2p's worth.smile

Thanks for the feedback, i'm off to have a look at your suggestions.

Going second hand might be a good shout.

Jonboy's selections are both really good choices, but of course only you can decide if you want a square faced watch too much to choose them.

Square faces limits your choices really.

I know I certainly wouldn't buy an Armani watch though, if that makes any difference.

Vostok Red Square

(googled images)

Also comes with red, blue or white dials. I've not had experience with this particular model, but I'm very fond of my Vostok Amphibia. The movements are accurate enough and reliable, but only have a semi-quickset date facility.

Some interesting choices there guys. I really like the idea of buying something that is recommended by people in the know. smile

Where's the best place to go and try a few on? I'm near Birmingham.

I don't think you can buy the Vostok from a shop.

C15 Henley Automatic

A very classy looking watch. Automatic movement. And from a well respected brand.

Can't go wrong with Christopher Ward watches mate. Do a search on here and you will see the high regard they are held in on PH. Fantastic quality at extremely reasonable prices.

Al1991 - I've tried to do this (as I've failed to copy images in the past), but I came unstuck on the "copy the image code" bit. which bit is the image code? And once you've got it, do you highlight it and right click to copy it?
