A new watch for my 30th....
Discussion
I know there are a lot of PH watch collectors so I'm hoping to get some impartial advice.
I'm in the market for a new watch for my 30th birthday. It's more of a present to me as there is one particular one I've always liked and always wanted to buy.
A Tag Heuer Carrera Automatic Chronograph Tachymetre
CV2010.BA0786

I know the movement isn't great on this watch and I've heard from some it's not worth the money as Tag don't actually make the movement, but I've noticed they've upgraded or seemed to have added the addition of a Calibre 16 movement. Does this mean anything? I heard this was their new movement and something quite nice to have, albeit with a higher price but I've no idea if this is it.
Nevertheless I love the design of this watch and have had my eyes on it for years. I think it's very classic and suits any occasion. Simple, elegant and beautiful.
I've also compared it to this one:
TAG Heuer Grand Carrera Calibre 17RS
CAV511A.BA0902

This is number two on my list....
This is significantly more expensive and contains the Calibre 17 movement. I've heard however this is far more accurate, at just 1/100th of a second. (I've no idea about the accuracy of the Calibre 16 movement). The jeweller told me this movement is made by Tag and therefore reflects the price. Is this true?
Carrera Automatic Chronograph Day-Date
CV2A10.BA0796

Finally there is this fella. Not my favourite out of the three and perhaps a little too modern for my liking and I doubt I would buy it, however I was told the movement of this is better than that of my favourite. Can anyone explain why?
At the end of the day, I'd just like a watch that I love wearing and that makes me feel good, but I would genuinely know more about the movements.
And finally a little watch pornography. This is simply stunning but unaffordable as it's just a concept!

Genuinely looking for the answer regarding the movements. Jewellers simply tell me one is better than the other without much knowledge as to why. Simply saying "because it's made by Tag Heuer", doesn't really answer my question.

You kidding? Lots of people use this forum. At least he'll get opinions off an informed audience not just loads of lounge goers posting inane s
te.
What Mr '91 says.OP - what's the budget? Do you WANT a Tag becuase you like the way they look? Becuase of their brand? or do you want something that has a fancy movement?
Lots of things to decide...!

But saying all that, it's nice to know how the movement works...and what's the difference in terms of accurate, quality and so forth.

Many people put the movement at the top of their list. They like the fact the auto is complicated / special / difficult / whatever... and the fact it’s an auto. If you want accurate, you could argue, buy a quartz...

Tags seem to have nice brand reputation for the man in the street, but watch-types sneer at them. Each to their own, I say.
If you want the watch to maintain value, but a Heuer – although be aware prices have been quite high for a while. If you just like the watch you’ve got to wear it, so get what you want.

OP, I have the Carrera at the top of your list and I like it very much. I have the one with the red chrono hands though, which i would recommend. Basically, they're slightly sneered at because they use an ETA movement, which is made by Swatch. however, I hear even Patek Phillipe have been putting ETA movements in their bottom of the range watches.
If you like that watch, just go for it. What I always liked about it is the depth of the case and the design. There aren't many that look or feel similar.
Anyway, happy watch shopping.

I bought the first one on your list for my 30th in the sales, the joys of having a christmas birthday. I like it and intend to keep it as it is a milestone purchase that I can pass down to a son/nephew. It was an impulse buy that pushed me into this WIS world before that I used to window shop the big named watches.

I have the same watch, i personally think in that budget nothing was as pretty, and the glass back also made me want it over any others; i now have an annoying habit of taking it off just to swing the movement around lol.
