Not fussed about the condition (within reasonable reason) as it'll be worn in harsher envrionments than I dare wear the IWC...

Is £1500 doable?

I've had a look around all the usual suspects on the net and there doesn't seem to be much under £2k.

Looking on the TZ forums the odd one, perhaps with a few marks, crops up for <$3500 though, hence my question.

I doubt you'll get one for much under £2000.

I bought a 2001 model GMT II back in August 2003 for 1550 quid, so it is possible. I think prices may have gone up a little since then, and I reckon I got a very good deal. So if you are lucky you can still find the odd bargain. I got mine via ebay (yes, I know!) after a million questions etc to the seller.
Obviously price depends on age and condition, when it was last serviced etc.

Recent price bumps to the other sports watches and the new GMT not being to everyone's taste has probably firmed the values up a bit... frown
