G-HEMS

I thought all aircraft registrations were unique.

Now I'm may be losing my marbles but I'm sure every time I watch an air rescue type programme on the TV the helicopter carries the registration G-HEMS.

So am I marbleless or is there more than one aircraft with the same registration?

It's owned by the Dollar Group so leased to whoever wants one, so that would explain any change of livery or colours. Before them it was owned by Virgin and before that the Daily Express had it.

Ah, I've definitely seen it in Virgin livery in London, I just saw it operating in white and green in the Pride Of Cumbria livery.

This is the new London Air Ambulance, that I believe replaced G-HEMS.

It is G-EHMS.

UK registrations are very rarely re-issued. G-HEMS was with the London AIr Ambulance service about ten years ago.

When it was yellow.

G-HEMS was the airframe that HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Service) started with in 1989. They flew in London with that until they launched with a MD902 Explorer registration G-EHMS in 2000.

G-HEMS was taken to Barbados after leaving HEMS and converted for use as a passenger charter. After a few years it was brought back to the UK and, on the way to an airfield on the back of a truck, was damaged by a low bridge. After having its tail section rebuilt, it was eventually re-converted to Air Ambulance specification and is currently use by the Great North Air Ambulance.

G-EHMS, the MD Explorer is up for replacement next year. He's a photo.

I used to watch G-HEMS take off from the Royal London from my student halls in Shadwell.
