Can any of you guys recommend a decent toastie maker?

I'm after one that takes a standard warburtons slice rather than needing to trim the edges off as most seem to be square in shape rather than rectangular, preferably one that allows a decent amount of fillings.

Our old cheap one we got from a supermarket and well quite simply its crap!

Buy toastie bread that’s sized to fit the square maker? We have this one: Breville Deep Fill Sandwich Toaster and Toastie Maker with Removable Plates, Non-Stick, Stainless Steel [VST041] https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00KM15VWY/ref=cm_sw_r... but it still requires smaller, square bread. Best feature is that you can get waffle plates for it

If your not bothered about having the edges sealed then a George Forman type thing is great for toasties. As an added bonus you can use much thicker bread, have done some great tasting bacon and cheese on ours using hand cut farmhouse loafs.

That is one of the ones I was considering.

Which bread do you use in it?

In my experience the smaller Warburtons are too small but the standard loaves are too big.

Warburtons thick slices toastie bread: https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/all-br...

Got to be thick sliced: tried medium once but it’s not thick enough to get squeezed properly and it doesn’t crisp up because of that

We've tried this method as our George foreman type thing can also be used as a panini press but I find it just squeezes the fillings out the sides which is why I'm after a toastie maker to seal it in.

I've always found Warburtons like that is too long for most toastie makers so the ends need to be cut off to fit properly.

Another vote for the Breville, its what I have.
Got some mozzerella, herbs, peperoni and tomato paste for a kind of pizza version.

Although the waffles do take ages to cook. Breakfast for 4 easily takes 45 mins once you take into account making the batter

I have that breville - does a good enough job. I use whatever bread I buy and chop the ends off. Only thing I'd say about it is that you need to use less filling than you think.

Used to use a toasted sandwich maker now just use a (non-oiled) griddle plan.Make a sandwich as normal then very lightly butter the outside of both sides of bread. Put on a griddle pan on a low heat. Press down with a spatula. Not particularly PH as its a cheap option but delicious and washing up's a doddle.

Batch cook the waffles in advance and freeze them. When you want them put them in the toaster to defrost and heat up at the same time. Breakfast done in the time it would take to do toast.

And another, had it for donkeys years, it's excellent every time. A tip, instead of lightly spreading margarine to the outside of the sandwiches lightly spread mayo. Gives a more delicate crunch, and a slight creamy texture.

Does the cheese not drip down into the toaster?

Not really noticed. I think the bread would burn before the cheese gets that runny. The cage does a good job of clamping it together anyway.

I do mine in a heavy frying pan.

No sealed edges but the end result is the same, crisp fried bread and melting cheesy lovliness.

The cheese oozing out a bit and browning on the hot pan adds to the delight.
