The Wigmore, London: ‘The best cheese toastie in town’ – restaurant review

I'd pay £13 for that any day.

I guess I was a little surprised that the price is considered "attention-grabbing" though?

I don't live in London but even around here go into an average pub and you can be paying £10 for a sandwich/baguette with a few chips.

Yep, seems reasonable to me (and I’m the op of the ‘restaurants taking the mick with pricing’ thread smile)

Looks very reasonable considering the ingredients, size and location.
For cheeky pricing look at 5Guys in any regional shopping centre food court.

Yes.

I think there is a pub round here selling a garlic bread for £8. But when you actually see it, it's not just garlic bread. It's a 12 incher with cheese and garlic etc so it's a bit different to the £4 starters you see of two small pieces of sourdough with garlic butter spread on top of it. Sounds like clever marketing to get people talking.

Is it just me or does that sound like "London"? Maybe I am too desensitised to it now. 13quid is a couple of pints now.

You'd be lucky to get a couple of pints for that here: https://inews.co.uk/news/salt-bae-nusr-et-london-r...

That is a fine review by Jay and I wouldn't baulk at paying £13 for something as tasty as that which is a main course. It sounds like cheesy luxury on a plate.

You're right. Mainly because I wouldn't even step foot in that BS restaurant.

As an interesting point, coming from Hull, where one would think beer is tuppence and a sarnie a quid, I think that looks pretty cheap.

What would make an interesting story is these Larnden folk coming up here expecting NOT to pay £13 for sarnie and realising it's just not that cheap anywhere any more!!

Ditto. Although, any self-respecting, powerfully-built PHer would laugh at the prices and order another round, surely? biggrin

The chain restaurants are some of the worst for VFM, went to Carlucci's for the first (and last) time at the weekend, £12 for a poached egg on toast and a drink.

A cardinal sin for me is having to leave a restaurant still hungry.

The one in the OP looks decent value for London.

Unsealed sides so not a toastie, but merely a sandwich which is toasted.
£13 doesn't sound like a huge amount of money.

I got a nice cheese and ham toastie in 'spoons the other day - it came with chips and a pint of Jaipur and cost me £5.95.

I had to sit with lots of ghastly working class folk and Brexity types buy, hey, it could have been worse!

Hard to knock a Wetherspoons for the price and it's not like the food is tasteless. Fortunately, I'm not a celeb chef and my tastebuds will accept most food, mind. But the fortune I've saved and the options I have available to me...

I got charged around £11 for a croque in Paris more than 25 years ago. ( exchange rate was very bad then but still outrageous).
