It s the time I ve been waiting for all winter, the British grown produce is coming back into store and it s the start of the season where fruit and veggies are at their best, but what ones are on your must have list?

For me, I live in the wye valley and bunches of asparagus from the farm shop are on the menu for a few glorious weeks, I have it with everything, just such a joyful product

Jersey royals are in season, buttery, golden and unbeatable

Scottish salmon, cooked in Cornish salted butter, with asparagus and jersey royals has to be a 10/10 showcase of simple food which tastes amazing

I m looking forward to British strawberries coming back, the Dyson farm ones just don t cut it, same with British raspberries, both served with local double cream.

Local beef on the bbq served up with British corn on the cob

And most importantly, the farm next door is reopening its ice cream pallor, all made with milk and ingredients from the farm

What are you looking forward too eating on the next few months?

Most Scottish salmon is farmed these days so I avoid it; agree with the rest of the OP’s post, though.

I'll have to disagree with the Jersey Royals - for over 10 years they've gone downhill and that includes from local farm shop that imports them direct. Charlotte's seem to be the nearest best especially when home grown.

My favourite veg that I'm waiting for is local Broad Beans yum

:edit: forgot to say it was probably since the EU put a ban on using seaweed as fertiliser on Jersey!!

Looking forward to seeing asparagus in the nearest farmers market, strawberries are happening already.

Sounds like a euro myth smile Probably because they became very popular and growing / production time was reduced to maximise profits. Seaweed out, plastic tents in.

I can't tell if this means "Oh no, I'm eating the adorable fluffy lambs" or "why an I paying for it instead of surreptitiously getting the rifle out".

Exactly,sludge coloured parasite riddled crap.
Plenty of antibiotics and dye and you get lovely salmon.

Are Jersey Royals actually Jersey Royals?

I seem to recall a news report a few years ago saying that to be called by their name they must actually be grown in Jersey, yet most we see in supermarkets are grown elsewhere and might not even be the genuine variety?

Jersey Royals is a protected name and have to be grown in that area to bear the name - the actual variety is "International Kidney" that are grown all over the World.

Asparagus and rhubarb are my seasonal faves (not together I hasten to add). Both absolutely fantastic ingredients whose enjoyment for me anyway is enhanced by the fact that the season lasts only a few short weeks. No chance to get tired of them.

Jersey Royals have been a waste of money for at least 10 yrs now. I's a shame as they used to be delicious.

The nearest I have found to how Jerseys used to taste are the small Canarian spuds you get in The Canaries (no, really?). They are quite dense and flavour packed, due to the volcanic soil and the limited amount of water used in their cultivation. I believe.

Only once have I seen them for sale in the UK though;)

Asparagus - one thing we seem to get so right in the UK.

There's an asparagus farm near Corbridge where we visit regularly during the season. Steamed with a lemon and olive oil dressing and some parmesan, some crusty bread and a glass of chilled white wine (Chapel Down would be perfect), I'm in heaven. For me completely it encapsulates this wonderful time of the year.
