Whilst perusing the aisles of Tesco last week I noticed an offer on SPAM, so I purchased my first ever can!

My first and last experience of SPAM was at a foodie festival (might have been the BBC Good Food Show/MasterChef Live) maybe15 years ago. I tasted a fried morsel no bigger than a centimetre cubed from a cocktail stick. I remember it being very good! Like a crispy fried fatty gammony taste..

I have my can of SPAM, tiger rolls, tomato ketchup, and I'm going to slice and fry the SPAM in a little olive oil. Anyone have any tips on how best to cook and use the mysterious meat?

Cheers smile

Well here it is in all its glory. It makes little squelching sounds as you shake it from the can.

I tasted a burnt corner, and it tasted very much like crispy bacon as I remembered it. However, when you get an entire mouthful it's not a great taste and texture. I'm glad I scratched the itch after all this time, but I won't be finishing off the can.

If you liked the crispy bacon taste...cut it thin (3mm) and then cook it under the grill, this gives it a completely different, crispy texture.

Add lettuce and tomato and you have a great sandwich IMO.

I always know what social class I am by how low I need to stoop to select my chosen products in supermarkets.

Spam - bottom shelf. Along with Heinz sandwich spread, tinned corned beef and Fray Bentos tinned pies.

Corned Beef shouldn’t be in that list

Get something similar called Bacon Grill in Northern Ireland. Partial to some thickish slices fried in butter in a white bread sandwich.

I was just away to suggest this particular can of filth !

Also OP - not a fan of frying anything in olive oil I find it gives a bad flavour, what redstar1 says, butter !)

Precisely. There's no comparison between canned beef and SPAM - Stuff Posing As Meat.

Their separate histories tell the story. South America had good quality beef but in the days before refrigeration it needed to be preserved by canning. Somewhat later, South America had left over pork shoulder, a poor quality meat that nobody wanted to buy, so they shoved it in a can and called it SPAM.

I had a similar experience. Always fancied trying it, did so, tasted OK in small portion but didn't finish it.

There's a YouTube channel called "CORNER KITCHEN ROTHERHAM" (Yes all in caps!) that cooks breakfast with spam.

I love the way he pronounces "Pork" as "Perwerk!" biggrin

I like Heinz Sandwich Spread on a slice of bread. Nothing else. I guess it's supposed to be a topping for a sandwich, but for me it's the main and only filling.

May we both be united in our stooping. Stoop and be proud!
