I know it’s easy to make proper gravy from stock etc, but for the occasions when that’s not possible, which instant gravy would you recommend?

That one. The “posh” ones are not as good.

I add a small amount of tomato purée and balsamic vinegar.

Now if only there existed decent pies down here to use it on.

I've tried a few over the years, and my favourite is this:

I make it with 50% stout and 50% water. Gives me a good excuse to drink the rest of the beer too.

This one for me, though be careful with this on PH, I am sure there was a thread where someone said they were horrified the first time they saw someone using instant gravy!

Bisto. Little bit of chill jam, or mustard, splash of milk to cream it up slightly, some pepper. Caramelised red onion if too if feeling posh.

I’m loving the “pimp my gravy” ideas.
Going to need to try a few of these

ASDA's own is pretty good, but I add an extra spoon or two... I like it thick.
(Add some Worcester sauce).

TBH, any instant gravy works....providing you add some sweated, sliced onions and a good spoon of wholegrain/Dijon mustard or horseradish

Gravox.

Unless you're after that watery brown mess that gets called Gravy in the UK, in that case that'll have too much flavour for you.

Yeah, nah. Luckily Colsworth do Bisto and so do Aldi when it's immigrant week,

These are decent, not salty, pretty herby and plenty of flavour, certainly better than bisto

They do beef/lamb/onion/pork ones too

They also do pouches of ready made stuff with fairly long shelf life

That makes no sense at all; you choose how thick it is by how much you use.

I can assure you, that is definitely not the case.

If you keep adding more and more crappy granules, you'll just end up with an overly salty mess.

Bisto plus a squirt of Tommy Ketchup.

Lovely

You've got to be able to stand a teaspoon it... & not be transparent either.
(Like in some restaurants... Personal preference.)

Actually i like bisto with a splash of worcester sauce and a squirt of daddys brown sauce to give it a tang
