I am usually a fan of having my food well done - I like my steaks brown all the way through, sausages black and crispy, and parnsips and roast potatos with black crunchy edges. This extends to toasted things as well - if a slice is slightly blackened then I find it even more tasty. However, my flatmates, evidently from the school of underdone cooking that seems to be weirdly popular thanks to certain celeb chefs, think I'm mad - to the point where they walked in today and nearly physically tried to stop me from eating the toasted sandwich below. As you can see, it is only scorched on the surface not burnt right through, which is due to the toasting bag getting very hot to the touch. To me, it's just nicely well done but the way they acted you'd think it would kill me to eat it.... so would anyone else have had it?

In answer to your question - No.

Turning food into carbon does not aid the flavour in my opinion.

I would have scraped the coal face into the sink! Then I might have been tempted. Do you actually enjoy the burnt taste and aroma?!

That looks fine to me! I would definitely have eaten it.

I like things well done too - veg that's soft (not crunchy), steak cooked right through (if it's pink I won't eat it) and anything roasted has to have burnt bits. I get tired of people trying to tell me that's wrong.

finally! you are the only other person I know who agrees that meat is better when it isnt still bleeding in the middle! I too get tired of trying to convince people that red is bad and brown is good

Why in your opinion brown better than pink/red? (snigger, I'm such a child hehe)

My experience tells me that steak that is pink in the middle is 1. More tender and 2. Has more flavour.

That toast needs the burnt bit scrapped of and it would then be perfectly edible. As for steaks they have to be warmed through for me about medium rare is perfect.

Burnt food is bad for you (as is any degree of browning, unfortunately frown).

However I'll risk browning steak and chicken skin, because browning is where the flavour is.

But why anyone would readily eat burnt toast just escapes me.

In answer to thread title, that is 'plain burnt' to me, no doubt.

I dont' like my steaks pink because some 'certain celebrity chefs' have made it popular, I just find it simply better in flavour and tenderness.

However, whatever floats your boat op, if that's how you like it, then no one can argue.
